“Of course, only after I sought out comfort in Heath’s arms. After all, he’ll be the only man to understand my pain.”

Fuck that shit!

“Yes, ma’am,” they both gritted between their teeth as deep growls lingered in their chests.

Chapter Forty-Six

Velora

After her bath, the twins helped her prepare lunch and set the table. Luka and Carrie knocked just as the last plate was in place. Since she had been the one to invite them, she went to the door and greeted them with a smile. “Come in! You’re just in time.”

Luka guided his mate inside by a hand on her back. “We brought dessert.”

“Just something small.”

“Perfect, because I didn’t have time to make anything,” Velora chirped, taking the warm dish from Carrie. “Just take a seat wherever you like.”

“Thank you, Luna.”

While Isaiah added the last dish to the table, Asher poured the first glass of wine. “Anyone else?” he asked the two approaching guests.

“Maybe just one,” Luka agreed with a grin.

But Carrie shook her head, so Velora fetched her something else while Luka pulled out a chair for her.

Once they’d all found a seat, Velora came clean. “I have to be honest with you two; I had a reason for inviting you over today.”

Carrie’s eyes turned slightly fearful while her mate’s brows furrowed. “I don’t understand.”

“As you’re aware, we no longer have a beta,” Isaiah continued. “We’ve been looking for a suitable replacement, and you’ve made quite the impression.”

The colour slowly faded from Luka’s cheeks as he processed his alpha’s words. He floundered for an acceptable response.

“It’s just an offer,” Asher clarified. “There’s no obligation to take it. This will greatly affect both your lives and we do not expect an answer right away.”

Carrie didn’t seem to understand and Luka was stunned speechless, so Velora tried to help.

“If Luka accepts the offer, it might affect your ability to spend the summers with your family. He’ll have pack duties to tend to and you’ll be a higher target for rogues. You won’t have to cut ties completely, but you might not be able to spend weeks away at a time. We understand what that means to you both and how great of an adjustment it will be, so we won’t be upset if you turn down the offer.”

“We also understand that our timing is rather bad and I can’t stress enough that this is a decision you two can take your time with,” Asher clarified.

“Asher’s right so please, take as much time as you need,” Velora insisted, seeing that they were both still struggling.

“I might need more than just a glass.” Luka’s response was dry and simple, but it made everyone chuckle.

“Don’t worry there’s plenty to go around.”

As they filled their plates, Velora encouraged Carrie to ask the questions that were clearly on her mind. She was shy and had trouble understanding what being a beta entailed. They all made sure to answer her questions fully and reassured her at every turn. Velora understood feeling out of place, and wanted to make sure Carrie had all the information she needed.

After they’d left, all three of them cleaned up to keep their mind off the upcoming attack. Velora hated waiting. Even more, she hated not knowing what to expect. She much preferred a surprise attack than to spend hours thinking about what was to come. She was also nervous, having never taken a lead position before.

Isaiah wrapped his arms around her from behind and gently ran his nose up her neck. “Don’t look so worried.”

“I’m just nervous.”

“Don’t be. We’ll be fine.”

Asher choked on the water he was drinking in an effort to hold back his laugh. “She’s not nervous about us returning, dumbass. She’s worried about her own performance.”
