“I got home, fixed a light dinner of crackers, meat slices, cheese and a glass of wine. I went to soak in a hot bubble bath for a bit. I had just gotten out of the tub and got my robe on when the doorbell rang. I went and answered it, didn’t see anyone there. As I backed away to close the door, that’s when I saw the dead cat laying on my doorstep. I quickly shut the door and ran to my room to grab my phone when this figure in a Jason mask jumped out of the closet and attacked me. Kept calling me a whore while he beat on me.”
“He wore a Jason mask?”
Avery chuckled at the confusion in his voice. “Yes. Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th movies. I love horror movies. The night I met you I was thinking a ‘B’ rated horror flick was better entertainment than the guy was.”
“I’ll take your word for it. What made you run to Lania and not to the police?”
“Because when my car was vandalized earlier in the week, the officer told me that it was probably retaliation because I either cheated on a good man or I was a tease. I didn’t feel safe calling the cops for that after the car incident.” Avery admitted softly, not looking at Knight.
“What was the officer’s name?”
“Dennis Green. I went to high school with him. He’s friends with my sister.”
Knight kept Avery occupied for most of the day until Delaney returned from Donovan’s penthouse upstairs. When she came back down, he couldn’t help the smirk when Avery apologized to his sister. The two women became fast friends.
After letting them know he was going to go upstairs to talk to Donovan and giving them strict orders to not leave unless he was with them, he went to his brother’s.
Letting himself into his brother’s place, he went into the kitchen and got a beer before sitting on the couch next to an amused Donovan. Seeing the smirk on his brother’s face, he flipped his middle finger as he took a drink of his beer.
“Rethinking the use of your precious sanctuary for the luscious Ms. Avery?”
“No. But we do have an issue. Well, two.” Knight advised his brother before taking another swig of his beer.
“What kind?”
“I think Delaney and Avery are being stalked by the same person. Their situations are too much alike. That may be why we can’t find the fucker in Boston. We also need to deal with Officer Green. Avery called the police when her car was vandalized, and he tried to make her feel like it was her fault.”
“Fucking asshole! How is she?”
“Scared. Embarrassed. She thought Delaney was my girlfriend.”
Knight couldn’t help but chuckle at that thought. His cock started stirring at the memory of her ripe, round ass under his hand as he spanked her ass.
“That situation fixed?”
“Yeah. Delaney is with her now. Getting ready to head back down.”
“Stick Thomas on Green. Next time he’s headed to Morris’s, we’ll deal with him. I’ll give Morris a call.”
“Thanks. I’ll let you know when Delaney is on her way back up.”
CHAPTER NINE
Avery looked up from her desk as the receptionist walked into the classroom after a brief knock. She looked at the woman in confusion when she came into the room carrying a dozen black roses.
“What’s this?” Avery asked the woman as she set the large vase down on the desk.
“Delivery for you.”
The receptionist turned around and left the room. Avery looked in the flowers for a card and found one with her name on it. All the card said was ‘next time’. There was no name on who it was from. Pulling out her phone, she messaged Knight.
Avery: “Why did you send me black roses? What does that even mean?”
Knight: “Black roses? They were told blue. Did they send the card?”
Avery: “What does “next time” even mean?”
Avery shook her head when Knight didn’t respond back. He didn’t even sign the card. Men!
