I nod, turning to meet his gaze. “Yeah. It’s so beautiful out here.”
“Yeah,” Logan says, keeping his eyes on me. “It is.”
I avert my gaze to the horizon, my brain wondering if he meant the sky or me. And because I’m a glutton for bringing heartbreak on myself, my head wanders to the idea of him calling Andrea after she gave him her number.
Did he call her?
Did they hang out?
I’m irrationally jealous of my coworker.
We both stand there for a few minutes in silence, until we hear a loud crash of glass hitting the ground. Both of our heads snap in the direction of the dance floor to find Avery and Peyton laughing in hysterics over spilling their drink all over the floor.
“We hit that move way too hard,” Avery breathes out through her laugh.
“I haven’t danced this hard in years,” Peyton shouts over the music. “Now I have to pee.”
“Oh, me too. Me too.” Avery says.
“I should probably follow and make sure she doesn’t fall down the stairs on her way.” I hear Thomas tell Marc.
“Right behind you,” Marc nods through a laugh.
I watch as everyone filters through the doors, including Oliver and Kali who said he needed another drink.
Logan doesn’t move from beside me.
I half expected him to follow for another drink too.
But instead, he turns to face me, forcing me to do the same.
“Em,” he exhales. “You look…. tonight... shit. I don’t have the words.”
My cheeks pink from the way he’s so flustered right now, and I can’t help but smile through the conflicting thoughts I have about him.
For the life of me, I can’t figure out what the hell is happening here.
Except right now, Logan is looking at me like he wants me.
I can’t have you… but that doesn’t mean I don’t want you.
The words ring in my ear, bringing me back to the time he said it, how I felt with his arms wrapped around me, and his face in my neck whispering them to me.
I take a step into him, willing him to let whatever is going on between us just happen.
Logan’s hand reaches up to the side of my face, brushing a loose strand of hair away from my eyes and tucking it behind my ear. The softness of his touch sends goosebumps down my spine.
Kiss me.A silent plea.
His eyes bounce between mine as if he’s considering it. His eyes drop to my lips as his body sways closer as if a breeze just forced him into me.
Only for Logan to pull his hand back, taking a step away from me. His eyes bounce between mine one more time before shaking his head and retreating through the doors that everyone just left through only moments ago.
I’ve been reading this all wrong.
Logan doesn’t want me. Is there attraction? Sure. But I’m always going to be like a sister to him, aren’t I?
I feel my breathing pick up, and my brain spiraling into anxiety.
