“I got you, Em,” I whisper in her ear.

Her hands grip my forearms with a three pulse squeeze before her body relaxes into mine.

I never realized she picked up on all the times I’ve done it to her.

I got you.

Three pulses for three words.

And we both drift off to sleep.

“It’sbullshit that we have an exam the second week of classes,” Brooke groans through the phone speaker sitting on my desk.

“You didn’t think they’d make our last semester easy for us, did you?”

“Well, no. But they could have followed the same plan for the last few classes we took. The first test happening in week three is a much smarter idea, not week two.”

I laugh as I flip through the pages of our study guide. Our one saving grace is that each exam this semester is only on one body system, instead of having to learn multiple and then figure out what will be on each exam.

“Did you remember to eat?” she asks me.

I roll my eyes even though she can’t see me. “Yes, Mom.”

Little does she know, Logan has been making sure I’m constantly eating. Whether it’s him showing up at my place tocook something or he’s having something delivered when I tell him I’m studying. The small gesture means so much to me.

“I’m just making sure. I know how you get when you go into study mode. Normally, the only thing in your stomach is peppermint mocha. Just partying away down there,” Brooke jokes.

“You’re hysterical,” I deadpan. “I actually feel okay. I understand all of this content on the nervous system. But I mean, I’m definitely still nervous.”

“Girl, allmy systems are nervous about this.”

The shit that comes out of her mouth.

“On that note, I’m going to get off the phone to study some more. I’m already annoyed I’m missing Taco Tuesday tonight.”

“You always have next week. Isn’t that like a standing thing you have, anyway?” Brooke asks.

“It is, but it was at my brother’s house this time. Remember, I told you Oliver has that new roommate?”

“Don’t remind me,” she says, annoyed. “Oliver is probably falling madly in love with her, and I lost my shot at being with the hot blond brother.”

“First, ew.” I wrinkle my face in disgust. “Second, I doubt it. She has a daughter and is trying to become a chef in the city. He’s just helping her out. You know Oliver will never settle down. Anyway, that’s all beside the point. I was excited to meet her tonight, andshewas cooking all of us dinner.”

“You totally should have gone. One or two hours away from the books wouldn’t have damaged your studying that much.”

Oh, if you only knew.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. But let me get back to studying. Love you.”

“Love you too. See you tomorrow,” Brooke says before we both hang up.

I spend the next fifteen minutes reviewing the study guides when a text comes through my phone.

Logan

What are you doing?

I stare at the message on my screen because Logan never texts me. The proof being there isn’t a single message between us before this one.
