“They were under some pretty heavy firewalls,” he agreed. “But I’m always better. I’ve got your number, I’ll give you a call if I find something, okay? Is there anything else you want me to look at pertaining to the company?”
I thought about it, glancing over the paperwork all over the table, most of which had to do with my research on publishing companies. “Um…yeah, actually,” I decided, my heart picking up. “I want to know if he changed anything in the last two years pertaining to assets. Me, mom, Charlie.”
Jack was quiet a moment. “Because of the affair.”
I nodded. “Yes.” I had to know. I had never had the option, but now I did, and I had to know. I had to know if he had always planned on leaving. I had to know if he had started changing things long before mom and Charlie died.
“I can look into it,” he agreed. “Are you certain you want to sell the company, Emily? Because I can find potential buyers too, if you’d like me too.”
I turned back to Grey just as he slid the steak into the pan. “Yes, I’m sure.” A new life, that’s what I had always wanted. Something separate of who I had been my whole life. I wanted to buildme. I wanted to focus on me.
“Good, I’ll be in contact.”
“Thank you, Jack, and it was nice to finally meet you.”
“You too, Emily, and hey, if you’re leaving anyway, make sure he feels it.” Click.
I lowered the phone, staring at the screen, my brows furrowing as I considered his words. How much had Grey told him? What did he know?
“So, how’s Jack?” Jeremy asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I blinked a few times and shook my head before turning forGrey. It was probably nothing. I’d figure it out later.
“He has a pet squirrel named Jeff,” I answered, sliding the phone back into Grey’s pocket.
I turned to Jeremy, finding him sitting straight up, his blue eyes wide. “What?”
I nodded as Grey leaned into me, kissing my neck gently, sending shockwaves across my skin. “Hmm—mm, Jeff the flying squirrel. Malachi didn’t really approve until Jack showed him that he taught him to carry a gun to him. I didn’t even know squirrels were that strong.”
Ash deadpanned. Syn was trying to hide her smile.
Jeremy’s look of shock slowly shifted into skepticism. “They aren’t that strong.”
“If it’s a small enough gun,” I shrugged, Grey’s kisses trailing up my neck, goosebumps spreading across my skin. Shit.
Jeremy leaned back in his chair, contemplating this new information.
Ash found my eyes, shaking her head in amusement.
It wasn’t my fault that Jeremy was gullible. He shouldn’t be this gullible working for Malachi, but Grey assured me he was a good man and an even better friend. He was worth being trusted, which was why we were all friendly enough now.
Grey nipped at my skin.
I gasped and turned on him, finding his eyes, my hands pressed into his chest, the silver and black ombre nails digging in. “Don’t.”
His pupils turned black. “I’ll let this steak burn, Snowflake.”
“I know,” I breathed, wanting nothing more than to be tied down right now. “But we have to eat and get ready.”
He smiled softly, his eyes trained on my lips. “I’m going to eat something.”
I shivered, remembering exactly what he had eaten just a few hours ago. Fuck, I’d give anything to go to our room right now, but we didn’t have the time, and we had so many people over. “When we get home tonight, you can use that toy you like,” I told him, already shaking in need.
His eyes flicked back to mine, so dark, I could see not a single ounce of hazel left. “The one that makes you…?”
I smiled and nodded. Even thinking about it made me want to skip the event altogether.
His smile widened. “Deal,” he mumbled and brushed his lips by mine. He straightened and looked over my head towards the table. “Jeremy, clean up the table, please.”
