“What’s that?” I asked, my voice a bare whisper.
He rose a brow. “The Shadows of Sin.”
My brows furrowed. “What?”
He nodded. “Sin is everywhere. Everyone knows about it. Lying, cheating, stealing. Adultery. Our world is made up of it. Without sin, our world wouldn’t exist, their world wouldn’t,” he nodded towards the door. “Jack, Everett, Azrael, and Grey, that’s what they are, the sons of Sin. The things you don’t see coming. Lurking in the shadows, always watching. It doesn’t matter how good you are, Malachi and his sons, his shadows, they will always find you, they will always put you back into your place.
“I don’t know who thought it was a good idea to push Grey likethis, but I promise you, Emily, they will regret it. In the great pyramid of this world, it goes Malachi, Beckett, Grey and his brothers and sisters, the people who work for Malachi, and then everyone else. You disrupt that, you challenge the entire hierarchy.”
A chill ran down my spine, but before I could respond, the door opened.
Jeremy and I turned. Grey was sliding his phone away as he returned, the air around him a little cooler than before.
I stepped back and watched as he pulled some plates from the cupboard and started dishing up the food.
Jeremy and I exchanged a glance, but neither of us pushed. If Grey wanted to tell us, he would, so we let it go for now and started putting the food on the table.
Ash poured everyone a glass of wine and we all took our seats, sliding into normal conversations about the night and how everything would go.
Grey never relaxed, not once, which did worry me more than anything else, but as the evening went on, as the dinner came to a close, my focus shifted onto the night’s plans.
We needed to get ready for the Charity Event, all five of us.

Fuck.
Azrael was making his way back towards us. Whatever he had wanted, he hadn’t accomplished, and according to Malachi, he had information.
Tonight was supposed to be a good night for Emily. A fun night. I wanted her to have fun and laugh and dance. If Azrael interrupted it for somebullshitmission, I’d fucking kill him.
But if he was finally willing to give me information on who was after her, then I had no choice. So long as he didn’t make Emily uncomfortable, everything would be fine.
I adjusted the cuffs of my new suit before making sure my gun was secure. I had yet to see the dress. She wanted to keep it a surprise until tonight, and I had to say, it was driving me insane.
Just from the questions she had asked me, wanting myapproval without giving it away, I knew it would be hard for me to keep myself off of her all night, but this wasn’t about our insatiable need for sex, this was about her.
She had expressed worry on multiple occasions because she knew her father and Helen would be there. A lot of people she knew would be there. Rich and powerful people who knew of the Glass family, who had either abandoned them or gossiped about them during the entire affair ordeal and then about the accident.
People who had accused her father of murdering them, of setting them up to die so he could be with his precious little mistress.
God, fuck Harold. I would give anything in the world to have what he had. A good family, two beautiful girls, a perfect wife who wanted to fall to her knees at a single word.
I shivered. One day, Emily and I would have a couple of kids. One day they would see how in love we were. They would never know a broken home, but they would know how strong their mother was, how beautiful, how perfect. They would adore her.
And I would fall even more in love with her.
She had blushed when I brought it up, the need to fill her with more than just my cock. The idea of having kids was something she had only considered once in her life, but she had made it clear that the idea of having one with me was like a dream.
Not yet, she had clarified.I want you all to myself for a while.
Me too, baby. As much as I wanted to see her swollen with my child, I couldn’t imagine sharing her with anyone. It was already a struggle having Ash, Syn, and Jeremy around all the time, but that was temporary, and I knew that. Once we figured out who was after her, it’d be just us again.
Kids were permanent, and I wasn’t quite ready for permanence, not yet.
