“Sparky better appreciate this because it is hell to not drink coffee.”
Cannon bit his lip because Jesse sounded like the kids when they’d pouted last night at bedtime. Her eyes popped open and caught his smirk.
“You better wipe that smile off your face. I’m tired. I’m cranky and my feet won’t fit in my boots or my other shoes today.”
He wasn’t sure what to say. Was sorry adequate for all the things she was going through?
“Umm, I know we aren’t going for our checkups for a week. I’d love to pay for new shoes if you want to order them and have them delivered. Remi has big feet. Could you borrow hers until new ones come in?”
Jesse stared at him and her eyes filled with tears. Oh fuck, he did not want to deal with tears.
“I’m so sorry. What did I say?”
Jesse shook her head. “That was so nice and sweet.”
“Well, I don’t want your feet to hurt. Besides bigger shoes, do we need to check why they are swelling? Is something going on with the pregnancy?”
Jesse turned and grabbed a glass, then opened the refrigerator and filled her glass with apple juice.
“I think everything is okay, but I’ll ask Stella if I need to have anything checked.”
Not being able to help Jesse was bothering Cannon more than he thought it would. He hoped his being at her house wasn’t causing added stress. Could stress make her feet swell? Maybe he’d text Flick and ask him. He sure wished Flick hadn’t had an early shift and was still here. It was hard as heck texting with his left hand and arm in a cast, but he wanted to know.
Cannon: Jesse’s feet are so swollen none of her shoes fit. Is this normal or is something wrong?
Flick: Gradual swelling in the later months of pregnancy is normal when the weight and fluid of pregnancy put strain on the legs and feet. If it’s only one foot or happened suddenly, it can be something to worry about. We can run by if we don’t get called out and check her blood pressure to rule that out, or she could drop in on Stella. Most likely nothing to worry about, but it’s always wise to double check.
Cannon: Thanks. Let me ask.
“Flick said you probably need your blood pressure checked and somebody to look at the swelling. Would you rather see Stella, or he said they can drop by as long as they don’t get called out?”
Cannon hoped Jesse didn’t think he had overstepped by checking with Flick, but he was worried about her. Jesse turned and stared at him.
“If Flick wants to drop by, then I wouldn’t have to call Stella, but only if they’re not busy. Thank you for checking.”
Cannon nodded because what was he supposed to say? It was his fault she was experiencing this.
Cannon: If you’re not busy, we’d love for you to stop by.
Flick: OOW
“What’s OOW mean?”
Jesse smiled. “I’m assuming On Our Way.”
“Okay.”
Beth walked in and poured herself a cup of coffee, then poured what seemed like a gallon of the chocolate creamer he’d seen. When he started to talk, she held her hand up in his face. She drank the whole cup in a couple of swallows.
“Now, tell me why you people can’t be quiet.”
“Jesse’s feet are swollen, so I texted Flick.”
Beth leaned down close to Jesse’s ankles.
“Oh wow, those look painful. Is Flick coming to check, or should I text Stella?”
“Flick is coming to check,” Cannon said.
