“What do you mean? What exactly aren’t you telling me?” She stepped closer, and Ellis reached forward, pulling me back. They still didn’t trust her, and that was fine. But I did.
“What exactly is a fire fairy?” I asked instead.
She shrugged, “I guess what it seems. Fairies usually specialize in an element of some kind. Mine just happens to be fire. But fire and ice are a strong, deadly element. So we come in twos, only I’m missing my other half. I should have an ice fairy to counteract my strength. But I swear to you, I’ve never lost control. I don’t even use it. Not really.” She paused, “Okay, there is the occasional fire lighting, but does that even count in the scheme of things?”
“I mean, if no one died, I don’t really seem the harm in it.” I offered.
“No. It doesn’t work that way.” Justice cut in, “She’s a danger, Libby.”
I feel like these men definitely needed a lesson in the longevity of a women’s friendship and trust. Between the boys and their two-hundred-year-old broken friendship and Justice who is the last person to trust anyone, well, they just wouldn’t get it. But girls, this friendship shit is impenetrable. I pulled away from Ellis and spread my arms, taking the few steps toward Michelle and wrapped my arms around her.
The room's temperature dropped as strings of thin ice shot from my fingertips. The ice hit the wooden floor, shattering and sending shards haphazardly in all directions. Michelle pushed away from my body, tears streaming down her eyes.
“I really would like to know what the fuck is going on now.”
Chapter 11
OAK
Fuck. What else is going to happen? What more complications could possibly be added to this clusterfuck of a situation?
Soul mates to three vampires. Check.
Fated mate to the wolf king. Check.
Mated to an ogre by proxy in a menage coupling. Check.
The ice pairing to a fire fairy. Fucking check.
The room only grew heavier with each ticking moment of silence until finally Ellis sighed. “Welcome to the shit show, once you’re in, you’re in for life.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Where do you want us to start?” I asked. I was still weary of her, still questioning her existence and motive, but the truth was, would the fates give Liberty these powers to match that of Michelle’s if she was a threat?
“The beginning would be nice.”
Liberty came close to me, threating her fingers in mine. Comfort. She was seeking comfort right now. She had taken in a lot with little argument, but I wondered what the final straw would be. What would send her over the edge into a completely human meltdown?
Ellis cleared his throat, “Well, it all started two hundred and eighty years ago when James-“
Michelle cut in, “Start with you guys.”
“Two hundred years ago we- “
She held up her hand and clarified, “and Liberty. Start with you guys and Liberty.”
I squeezed Liberty’s hand before speaking, continuing where Ellis left off. “We met Liberty the night we were summoned to this place for a last call of our maker. He left us a letter asking us to protect Liberty. We didn’t know who she was, or what she was. But that evening, when the other vampire attacked her, we had no choice but to go to her, find her, save her.”
“And you couldn’t do that and leave her?”
“No. The moment we got close to her, there was no going back for us. She made us have these unique abilities, and we were drawn to her, like it was almost a need.”
“So the other guys?” she gestured to Lenin and Justice.
“We found out Liberty was a descendant of our maker.” Michelle gasped, her hand going to her mouth, “But that’s impossible.”
“It’s not. We are all descendants of our maker’s maker.”
