What the fuck does that even mean? “Oak?”

“Fairies always come in twos. If there is one, it’s curious as to where the other is hiding and what is the motive.” He crossed his arms to mirror my own, his eyes shooting daggers at her.

I turned to Michelle, whose mouth was gapping open in surprise. “I swear Liberty, It’s only me. But you need to leave. This whole room is dripping with – with – supernatural. Shit, I swear I’m not crazy.”

Yeah, like I hadn’t repeated that to myself a million and one times today alone, “But you’re a fairy?”

“I- “she began, but Justice cut her off.

“A fucking fire fairy at that.”

I turned my eyes away from Justice and to my friend, “It’s – it’s – fuck. It’s true, okay, but I swear it’s only me.”

I didn’t know what made me angrier, the fact that our whole friendship was a lie or the fact that she knew Daniel was a vampire and still sent me with him. “You knew Daniel was a vampire!”

“Well yes, but damn it. You needed to get laid. I figured one bite, the best orgasm of your life and BAM! You’re one happy girl.”

“He tried to kill me.” I said, my voice void of emotions as all the men behind me made a threatening sound. I swear I felt the heat coming off Oak in waves. Just the memory of having him near me made him furious.

“I didn’t know!” she paused. “But it appears you managed just fine since then, minus the fact that you can’t pick up a fucking phone!”

Guilt flooded me and I reached the back of my neck, scratching it while avoiding her eyes. Shit. I knew Michelle, she was my best friend. There was absolutely no way she would intentionally hurt me. “I’m sorry I didn’t answer.”

She sighed, “Yeah. I’m sorry too, about all of it.” Her gaze flicked behind me, “Do I need to worry about them?”

“Only one of them. . . maybe two? The others are harmless puppies.” I smirked, knowing full well they were all wondering if I placed them in the puppy category or the killer one.

“I see.” She eyed them all warily, “I don’t have a pair. I never did. I was born in a slave camp and smuggled out. If I had a pair, I bet that’s where to find it.”

Justice crossed his arms, “Where?”

“Why would I tell you?”

He raised a brow, “A great amount of my people have disappeared. Only my small tribe of wolf shifters remain.”

“And I’m supposed to care? Everyone’s people have disappeared. Everyone’s population is dwindling. What makes you so special?” As she spoke, Justice became more agitated, this low growl more audible.

“I am their king and it is my duty to find them.” He ground out and Michelle’s eyes grew wide.

“King? You brought a paranormal royalty into the city?”

I shrugged, “I didn’t bring him, he offered to come.”

It was true, not like she accepted it. “People will come for him.”

“People are already coming for us, regardless.” I pointed out.

“You need to send him back.” She insisted.

“I think I’ll keep him.”

She glanced behind me, “And what about the others? It’s not safe to be around this many paranormal at once. Not for a human, not for you.”

“I’m also keeping them.”

“They are living, you can’t just keep them like pets!” She sneered.

“I sort of feel like, at this point, being around this many of them, I’m their pet.” I offered.
