She laughed as I closed the door behind her. “So are you going to be his friend?”

So much for trying to be vague. “He’s looking for Brody Savage. He thought I might know him since he lives down the road from me.” I headed for the kitchen to let Buttercup back in. She scooted past me and went to greet Millie. “You want coffee before we head out?”

“Okay, wait a minute.”

I turned to find Millie on her haunches, petting Buttercup.

“He’s a friend of Brody’s, but doesn’t know where he lives?”

I sighed. “No, he knows where he lives, but Brody wasn’t home so he came here thinking I might know where he was.”

“You didn’t tell him, did you?”

I stopped and looked at Millie with a frown of suspicion. Did she know where Brody was? “How could I when I don’t know where he is. And I wouldn’t anyway. The guy said he was a friend, but he could be a killer for all I know. So I told him I didn’t know Brody. I learned a long time ago not to trust anyone until I get to know them.” Since I wasn’t sure how much Millie knew, I decided to keep my concerns about the man to myself, half-convinced that I was being slightly paranoid anyway.

“He looked harmless enough,” she pointed out. She gave Buttercup a last scratch and stood up.

“Looks can be deceiving, honey. But you’re probably right. And he did pass Smokey’s test.”

Millie chuckled. “Don’t put too much faith in a prospect, girl, they’re big tough bikers in training.”

As if I didn’t already know that.

“Speaking of Smokey, why is he here?”

I shrugged because I honestly didn’t know why. Since Millie hadn’t said that she wanted a cup of coffee before we left, I snatched up my purse. “You mean you don’t know why?”

She shook her head. “Nope. Believe it or not, Loco doesn’t tell me everything.”

I turned back to her. “Ready to go?”

Her face fell. “What about the coffee?”

I just stared at her for a minute, blinking. “You never answered me.” I set my purse back down and went to the coffee maker.

“So what’s on the agenda for the day?”

I hadn’t told Millie that I was going to look for a new car. I actually hadn’t told her anything other than to book the day with me so we could hang out. I figured we would hit the car dealership up first to get it out of the way. I’d already done my research, and they had the car I wanted. A 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage in a dark plum color with tinted windows. It would be the newest car I’d ever owned. One call, and they’d promised to hold it for me until noon today.

“Today is the day I get a new car,” I told her. Coffee made, I brought it to her where she was sitting at the island, then went to the fridge for the creamer.

“Oh, God, I hate car shopping!” she exclaimed, pouring a generous amount of creamer in her coffee. “Glad I didn’t have high expectations for today.”

“Relax, missy. I’ve already done the leg work. We basically just need to test drive it and we’re done.”

“What kind?”

I told her all the details.

“It sounds right up your alley,” she snickered.

“What do you mean?”

She took a sip of her coffee. “Cute, small, eye-catching.”

I frowned at her in confusion.

“The color,” she explained.
