“I’m okay,” I said aloud, whether for their sake or mine I was not sure.
But Liam must not have heard me, or he didn’t care that I was unhurt, because he scooped me up like I was a child.
“Wrap your legs around my waist,” he commanded, and I did. Hugging him tight as he carried me out of there.
My hero. My husband.My love.
Chapter 36-Liam
Iplaced Michaela on the seat, letting her go reluctantly. Anger still vibrated through me, only now I was mad at myself.
How the fuck could this happen?
“How? Explain,” Adrik snapped as he got in the big SUV with us.
Somehow, Connor Callahan and Josef Aziz managed to fit in the front, leaving me and my father-in-law and wife in the back.
“It was an inside job,” Connor confirmed my worst fears.
Fuck.
“So, someone who knew the system slipped past our defenses,” I growled, so fucking angry.
“Who?”
“I don’t know. My men are already at Chen's place. Her father is the one making all the crazy demands. But I fucking refused to play ball. I told him we were doing this my way, but no more negotiations. Now he’s fucking done,” I promised.
“His daughter works for you, yes? She is the one who did this?” Adrik asked.
“No. It wasn’t Clarissa, it was Margaret,” Michaela said, interrupting us both.
I looked down at our entwined hands, her ruby ring glittering. I probably needed to tell her about the tracking device. And I would. Later.
The sight of her small hand holding mine was so profound. It calmed me like nothing else could. A balm to my bruised soul.
Then I paused to process her words.
Margaret?
No.
Fuck.
Margaret did this. Of course she did.
A tide of fury surged through my veins. My temper flared, building like a gathering storm, spreading through my limbs like wildfire.
“Liam. I am safe now. You came for me,” Michaela whispered as her father talked on the phone, likely putting plans into motion.
“I’ll always come for you, Wife. I can’t live without you,” I replied.
I lifted our joined hands and kissed hers. Then I turned to my driver.
“Connor, we are taking Mrs. O’Doyle home. Then I want you and a team to round up my sister.”
Chapter 37-Michaela
Inever liked being afraid. But when Liam and my father left me at the apartment, I felt true fear.
