“Awe, Edith, I wasn’t trying to make you cry.” She winkled her nose. “I just wanted to be sure you’d have the best first date ever.”

There was a lump in my throat as I whispered. “Evie, I really like him.”

Evie grabbed my head. “I know, big sister. And I really believe he’s the one for you.”

“Am I a selfish bitch to want one more night with him to be just us before I tell him about Mattie?”

Evelyn threw her head back, laughing. “Nope.”

“What’s so funny?”

“They’ll know each other when it’s time.”

“Thanks, Evie.”

“You’re welcome.” She went through the swinging door to the back in the walk in and I heard Big E giving her a verbal list of his needs.

Gene came behind the counter and started a fresh pot of coffee. “Go get your work done. I got them.”

I had the order to do, and some other paperwork. Heading back to the office, I made myself a plate of fries and got settled in.

Once I had everything done, I went out to check on Gene and Evie.

“You better get home before your son creates a dating profile for you.” Gene laughed as he walked past me with a tray of food.

Shit. He’s not wrong.

“I’m out.”

Evie waved me off and as I walked through the kitchen, Big E saluted me.

Taking a deep breath, I walked in the crisp fall air, smiling like a twitterpated teen.

Deep down, I was excited for Friday night. A real date. With Frank.

I bet Matthew would like him.

That thought brought me back to earth. I needed to get to know more about Frank before I introduced them.

I’m not a moron, I can’t bring just anyone to meet my son.

“Mom!” Matthew ran over, wrapping his arms around me. “Can we have fries for dinner?”

“Only fries?”

“Yeah! With cheese and gravy.”

“Ah.” I laughed. “American poutine.”

“Why’s it American?”

“Canadians use cheese curds.” I took his hand as we walked towards the apartment. “How was school?”

“It was great!” He bounced. “Doc played kickball with us.”

“That’s cool.”

“Mom.” He stopped walking. “It was epic!”
