She slid in next to me at the dining table, grinning and lifting her eyebrow toward Jay. I was sure she was already making wedding plans in her head. I sighed once again.
“This is the best lemon soda I have ever had. You must have magic hands, ma’am,” Jay said, totally buttering up Aunty M. I snorted loudly. If only he ate anything else that she made.
They both looked at me with a weird look on their face. I blushed.
“I just thought of something,” I mumbled to no one.
“Ma’am, this was delicious. Thank you for the drink,” Jay said as he got up to place the glass on the table.
Aunty M blushed, glad to know I wasn’t the only one affected by his charms. “Oh, please call me Marie, darling.”
He nodded.
“I see you guys still have a lot to unpack.” Jay lifted his chin toward the boxes.
“Ah yes, honey. We just moved in two days ago. I work as an ER nurse at the hospital, and with my hectic schedule, it’s going to take a while before we get settled in.”
“I am happy to help you unpack. I am around tomorrow if you need me,” he said, giving her one of his signature good-boy smiles.
And she fell for it.
“I am pulling in a double shift tomorrow. Hell, I have to be at the hospital in an hour, but I am sure Evy needs help. She has a lot to unpack in her room.” She beamed with a sly grin on her face.
“No, that’s not necessary. I am sure I can manage Aunty M,” I said.
“Great, I am free tomorrow evening. I can help you. I will meet you after school then,” Jay promised, completely dismissing me.
“Thank you, honey. Evy could use an extra pair of hands.” She grinned.
Did they even care about what I had to say? Apparently, it was settled. Jay was going to help me unpack tomorrow.Oh, God, save me now.
“Let’s get going then, little shit.” Jay nodded toward Lily. “Good night, Marie,” he said as they both made their way toward the door.
Aunty M pushed me forward to see them out. I rolled my eyes at her.
I held the door open for them. Lily waved to me, already making her way toward a white house at the end of the street which I assumed was their home.
“Give me your phone.” Jay extended his hand.
I looked at him, confused, as I dug into my pocket and reached for my phone, placing it in his palm.
He quickly typed in something and handed it back to me.
“Here, this is my number. Call me if you need anything. My house is number 43, down the road.” He pointed to where Lily had walked. “Lock the door after your aunt leaves. Although Bellevue is pretty safe, you never seem to know. Good night, Evy. I will see you tomorrow.” Jay’s eyes locked on mine as he leaned in and kissed my cheek right in the corner of my mouth, where he swiped his thumb not too long ago.
It was so quick that I hardly had time to react. I watched as he was already halfway to his house.
I stood there stunned for a few seconds as I brought my finger to where his lips were a second ago. Oh, God, he just kissed me on the cheek. I looked down at my phone and saw that he had saved his number as Jay. I blushed. Can he read my mind now? He definitely heard what I said earlier, didn’t he? Ah.
Dear Diary,
I met someone today, someone who made me feel things I didn’t want to feel. But I liked it. I loved it even. My soul felt comfortable around him, isn’t that a weird thing to say about someone whom I had just met? But it was the truth. I call him Jay in my head because the color of his eyes looked so much like the feather of the Blue Jay bird. It was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw him. How weird was that? But he was doing something to me. I can't explain it. But it makes my heart race faster, wilder. I don’t know how to feel about all this. I hoped I knew why. Why did this boy make me feel like he was going to completely ruin me? Forever.
Love xoxo,
Evy.
