I couldn’t help it. “I love you too,” I said in a very low voice that was barely audible, but he heard it.
“I love you more.” Jay beamed.
I don’t even remember when was the last time I told him that I loved him. He looked truly happy, so I didn’t question it.
I leaned my head onto his shoulders while I watched the others, a small smile dancing on my face. I clutched his hand under the table as my lifeline because I needed it.

I downed my glass of white wine in one go. I started drinking again, especially in the morning. It helped me play the part I had to.
“You are drinking again.” Jay sighed, leaning against the kitchen counter.
“Is my drinking now a problem, Jay? Was I supposed to ask for your permission?” I rolled my eyes as I poured myself another glass.
The whole gang quieted down as they watched us. We were all going to some bougie boutique to get our dresses for the event. A boutique that White suggested, and she was going to be there. He didn’t understand, but I needed a drink if I had to see her face. The event was in less than two days, and Katy was the only one who had already gotten a dress. She almost fainted that none of us had gotten our costumes ready yet and was dragging us all to the boutique.
“It’s not your drinking that’s the problem, Evy. It’s the way you act after that.”
I ignored him as I downed my second glass and poured myself a third.
He just shook his head in frustration, and the entire room watched us, not knowing what to say.
I headed to the swimming pool outside because I knew Will was swimming there.
I sighed at how weird my life had turned out to be. L.A. had turned my life into a literal movie.
Will had just gotten out of the pool and he smiled as he walked over to me, trying to hug me. I shrieked as I ran away from him. He was going to ruin my dress with his wet body. The wine in my hand sloshed all over the floor.
“Stop!” I laughed as I ran away from him.
“No can do,” Will said, pulling my hand and bringing me closer to him.
“Will, ah, stop.”
He didn’t listen as he shook his head, getting water droplets all over my shirt.
“What the fuck is going on here?” Jay thundered, gabbing me away from Will, splashing my wine all over my top. Hell, that was cold.
Jay shoved Will so hard against his chest that he almost fell on his ass. “Stay the fuck away from my girl.”
My eyes widened. God, he was so angry. He clenched his jaw so hard that the vein in his forehead almost popped out.
When we planned this, I knew Jay would get angry, but I didn’t realize he would be this mad. White asked me to make Jay jealous and she had actually given me two tasks today. The latter I must execute later tonight.
“Sorry, man, I was just playing.” Will shrugged before he jumped back into the pool.
“Let me go!” I squirmed, pulling my hand away. He squeezed my wrist so hard that red marks were already forming all over it.
As soon as he noticed that, he let me go but was in my face in a second. “What the fuck do you think you are doing, Evelyn?”
“What am I doing? What about you? What were you doing? I was just playing with my friend and you barged in here like some sort of jealous caveman. And you ruined my dress. And my wine,” I stammered.
“I ruined your dress,” Jay screamed in my face. His eyes were wild with anger—he had never looked at me like that before. He pointed to himself. “I fucking ruined your dress. And your fucking wine.” He grabbed the glass from my hand and smashed it on the wall behind me.
“You fucking treat me like shit. I have been so patient trying to be there for you for months. Trying to fucking figure out what’s wrong with you while you are flirting and laughing with another man. Is that what it is? You want to fuck someone else?” He roared so loudly that all the others gathered.
My hands shook while my heart pounded. I had never seen Jay this angry. I was scared of him at the moment.
