“Hey, Em.” Aunty M pulled back from me and greeted him.
Jay was trying to meet my gaze, but I kept looking away.
“What do you kids want for dinner?” Aunty M asked, but was back on her phone, now grinning.
“Oh, it looks like someone needs to tell me something.” I raised my brow at her.
“Wh-h.” She stopped as soon as she noticed me.
I gestured toward her phone. “You’re smiling, Aunty M, at your phone no less. The last time I saw you smiling like that was when you were with that ass, Max. So, tell me who is it?”
She sighed but got a dreamy look in her eyes as she explained, “His name is Liam. I met him at work. But he is not from around here. He is from Seattle.”
“And?” I persuaded.
Jay rolled his eyes at my demand from his seat on the couch.
Again, men do not know when to stop. I am going to let him grovel forever.
“We went out a few times, but it’s not serious or anything.” She blushed.
I knew Aunty M didn’t really do relationships. So, it was her way of saying that she slept with him a few times. But she usually doesn’t smile like this if it was just a hookup. It meant she was already smitten by him.
“So, when are you going out next?” I continued.
“I am not sure. He asked me to meet him tonight, but I haven’t been able to spend time with you much, so I passed on it.” She smiled.
“Don’t worry about me! I will be fine. Call him now, Aunty M!” I exclaimed. I knew she wanted to go but was staying only for me. Aunty M deserved to be happy more than anyone else in the world. I wanted that for her.
“Yes, Marie. Don’t worry, I will take good care of Evelyn tonight,” Jay called out from the couch.
“I know, Em and I trust you to take good care of her.” Aunty M gave him a warm smile.
He grinned back, proud of himself.
I couldn’t believe these two.
“I will go call him. Are you sure you will be okay, sweetie?” she asked me.
“Yes.”
“I will call him then,” she said, rushing to her bedroom.
God, she must really like him.
A pair of familiar arms snaked around my hips, and a chin plopped on my shoulder. “Sweetheart, are you still mad?”
“Yes,” I replied, pulling away from him.
“I am sorry I laughed.”
“You tease me all the time, Jay.” I pouted.
“But you are too cute, even when you are mad. What can I do?” Jay gave me his full-blown grin that made his eyes spark.
I controlled myself to not swoon at that. I needed to be strong. I cannot lose this fight.
Just then Aunty M walked back in. “He said he would pick me up in an hour. You mind if I stay the weekend in Seattle, Evy?” she asked, her face hopeful.
