“What?” he says, looking at me up and down.
“I found out this morning. I was going to surprise you tomorrow. I had a sign and everything.”
“Oh my god, angel! Are you sure?” Excitement fills his eyes.
“Son, I…”
“Don’t, Raymond. You will never see this child, he will never call you grandpa. Ever.” If looks could kill, Raymond would be dead. The fierceness in Kohen’s eyes is like nothing I have ever seen, even when he was at his angriest.
He turns to me. “Let’s go, angel, none of this matters. Not one bit.” He wraps his arm around me and we begin to walk away. He pauses and I look up at him, “One more thing,” he says and I nod.
He turns back, walks right up to his dad, and punches him square in the face. “That’s for touching my fucking wife.”
“I didn’t know she was pregnant, son,” he yells.
I’m not sure why me being pregnant changes anything. I look back at the man and he looks defeated, as if losing his son and grandchild is actually killing him. Why treat him this way then? Why not accept the woman he chose?
We rush into the atrium and Levi isn’t here. Kohen checks his phone and calls Levi.
“Hey, Levi, are y’all good?”
“What hospital?” I stay quiet, trying to make out anything Levi responds but I can’t.
“We will be right there,” Kohen says before he hangs up. “She’s okay, baby. He says she woke up. Looks like she just hit her head. They are checking on the baby now.” His words ease my worry a bit.
I grab his hand, assuming we are going to the hospital but he doesn’t move.
“Angel,” he says, tears in his eyes. His hands move to my stomach. “We made a baby.”
I laugh. “Yeah we did, is that okay?”
“Yes, angel. Yes!” he says, lifting me up and spinning me around.
“I can’t believe this, my mom would be so happy.”
“I’m sorry about your dad,” I say, kissing him.
“No, baby. I’m sorry. I’m sorry that two men have touched you under my watch.” He sets me down. “I failed you. I keep failing you.”
I place my hand on his cheek and he nuzzles in. “No, handsome, you have not failed me. You saved me both times, protected me, defended my honor and you haven’t treated me any different because of it. This might sound bad but it doesn’t phase me, I’ve dealt with being violated that way my whole life because of my body type. Walker always said I asked for it because of how I dressed, but I know that’s not true.
“You still look at me like I’m beautiful and that’s all that matters. I’m numb to whatever else, I used my body as a weapon for so long after that…” I halt, thinking of how to phrase all this better because right now it sounds bad. “I don’t feel like you have failed me. I only know that you saved me and you love me, and cherish me like I’m art.”
He pulls me in for a kiss, deep and passionate. Everything we need to say is being said between us now.
“You are art, angel. You, my beautiful sexy wife, are a masterpiece. Now let’s go be with our family.”
“Wait,” I say a little louder than intended. I look around a bit, embarrassed. “Does any part of you feel like we are too young for this? Or that it’s…‘ I look around, trying to wrestle the words together. “I don’t know, did it happen too quick?”
He smirks, bringing my knuckles to his lips and he kisses them, inhaling my scent.
“You wore my favorite perfume,” is all he says, twisting my wrist and bringing it to his nose. His eyes close as he breathes me in. “No, angel. We aren’t too young, and it isn’t too fast. We belong together, I know it. I’ve known it since the first time I smelt this perfume on the stairs in my house. I was born to be your husband and you were created to be the mother of my children. Are we young?” He pauses. “Yes. But nothing can stop what fate means for us.”
“Okay,” is all I say, grabbing his other hand. “Now, we can go.”
