“I’m planning on having fun tonight.”

“That was kind of my plan, too.”

She sets her glass down on the small wooden trestle table behind her and moves closer, sliding her hand around the back of my neck, pulling my head down until our mouths connect. “Looks like we’re on the same page, then.”

My face breaks into a smile, I mean, come on! Who wouldn’t want to kiss the mouth off his woman? She’s fucking incredible! But there’s still a part of me that wishes she wasn’t.

“We’re definitely that,” I whisper, my mouth brushing the side of her neck, my palm pressed flat on the small of her back, keeping her pinned against me, our bodies moulding together like we were made to be this way. “We’re going to have so much fun it’ll make your head spin.”

She throws her head back and laughs, and I kiss the base of her throat, working my way up until my mouth finds hers, her fingers winding in my hair as the kiss deepens, our bodies pressed so close together there isn’t even a wisp of air between us. And for a few moments I try to block out what’s coming; try not to think about how all this might end. But it has to, end. Soon.

“Looks like your ex is all for a bit of PDA,” Tania points out as we step out onto the terrace, to be met with the sight of Megan and Xander making out like a couple of teenagers.

“PDA?” I ask, frowning slightly.

“Public displays of affection. And to be fair to her, if I’d hooked up with someone as hot as him I’d find it hard to keep my hands off him, too.” What I can only describe as a sort of half-smirk plays at the corners of her mouth as she watches my ex-wife and Beachcastle Bay’s newest, and thankfully temporary, resident. “I’m a little jealous, actually. I was talking to him earlier, and believe me, he’s even more beautiful close-up.”

I find myself biting the inside of my cheek to stop me from saying something that’s only going to come across as sounding bitter, and I keep my eyes focused on Megan. It’s difficult to tear them away, to be honest, she looks incredible tonight. Younger. More alive. Happier than I’ve ever seen her, was she ever that happy with me? Was I around enough to even notice?

“Areyoufeeling just a little bit envious too, hmm?”

Tania’s voice pulls me back from those thoughts, and I finally tear my gaze away from Megan. “Sorry? No. No, of course not. Megan and I, we’re history.”

We’re not.

We’re so not.

And Tania knows that.

“Because, you’d have every right to be. I mean, seeing your ex with someone likehim…”

She gives a small whistle under her breath and leaves that sentence hanging. And I feel my stomach clench, my nerves are on edge. I’d desperately hoped that Megan knowing I was here with someone else – I’d hoped to get some kind of reaction. I’m getting nothing. She barely has eyes for anyone other than Xander.

“You know, I’m really glad we’re doing this.”

Once again, Tania’s voice drags me back from thoughts that are only designed to depress me even more, and I look at her, and I force a smile. “Doing what?”

“Spending time together.”

“Yes. I’m glad, too.”

“You don’t look it.”

“Don’t I?”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.”

That’s a lie. That’s such a big, fucking lie.

She frowns, and cocks her head slightly, she’s not buying that. And I don’t blame her.

“You still think you can win her back, huh?”

I throw Tania a weak smile. “I want to think that’s still possible, yes. Look, Tania, I’m sorry…”
