Relief washed over me.

We had nothing so that wouldn’t be an issue. Nuva Pack was broke and unless you wanted a trailer park or a prison, there was no reason to come after our land. Ranger was the only one who’d benefit from a fight with Trenton, but he’d said he didn’t want Nuva Pack. Trenton was going to be safe.

“I’m surprised Trenton hasn’t set any targets,” Ismelda spoke in an offhand way that made my eyes narrow.

I resisted the urge to ask her what she knew. Because if Trenton was going to start anything that would get him hurt and piss off his father, I’d kick his butt myself. “Why would he set a target?”

The line moved a few steps forward and we hurried to fill the empty space.

“Most of the smaller packs use this as an opportunity to prove themselves to the other Alphas,” Kimberly said as if that made perfect sense.

It did make sense, but if that idiot Trenton thought he could do something dumb that would jeopardize my mission here and put my papa in danger, I wouldn’t hesitate to finish what I started on our first mating season.

I could only imagine how Alpha Derek would twist the situation to put the blame on me if Trenton got hurt acting like some tough-ass-wolf. There didn’t seem to be any Alphas Trenton had an issue with though…

Ranger.

He wouldn’t.

Trenton was an idiot, but he wasn’tthatmuch of an idiot. If he tried to fight Ranger, he’d be dead.

I looked over my shoulder at the elevators, wishing Ranger would come strolling into the lobby. Maybe I could ask for his help or strike some sort of bargain to keep Trenton safe. At least until mating season started and I could fulfill my deal with Derek.

“Trenton is kind of hot,” Ismelda said, snapping me from my rising internal panic.

Eww.My wolf gagged.

I smiled uncomfortably, thinking of Alpha Derek adding the stipulation about helping Trenton find a mate. “You think so?”

I felt icky. Ismelda seemed sweet.

“He’s no Ranger,” she laughed. My wolf let out a dangerous growl.

“Not that I’m stepping on your territory or anything,” Ismelda added as she turned her head. All four of the girls were baring their necks.

I clapped my hands over my mouth. My beast wasn’t that dominant, but with the way the girls were acting it didn’t seem that way.

“Sorry,” I said. “My wolf is going crazy lately.”

Danielle was the first to giggle causing everyone to relax. “Don’t even worry about it. We’re all feeling the coming heat. Yesterday I woke up half shifted with my bra shredded. I can’t remember what I was dreaming about, but it must have been good.”

Amber nudged her sister with a playful smile. “At least you’re still wearing the same size bra. I swear mine is cutting into my skin now.”

“My boobs are growing too,” Ismelda groaned, causing everyone to laugh. “Why is this happening? It’s not like we have to nurse any pups yet.”

I joined in on their commiserative laughter, feeling a twinge of sadness at the paranoia that came with almost being poisoned. It’d caused me to miss out on bonding with any of the other Lunas who’d passed the trials. My pack was shitty and I didn’t have many girl friends except for Clara. Wolf and coyote biology were similar, but it was hard to feel sisterly close to someone in prison, especially when I was in an educator position there.

I looked over my shoulder again, sad when the elevator door opened and only a camera crew came out. Fallon had been acting strange lately too. I wanted to find her and make sure she was okay.

The girls were still talking about their pre-heat embarrassing moments as we inched closer to the interview booth, but it suddenly grew silent as they looked to me.

Oh, right.I was a part of this conversation too. My cheeks flamed red as I thought about the effects of the heat. “Did everyone see what I did at the obstacle course yesterday?”

“That was so hot.” Kimberly fanned herself. “I wish I already knew who I was claiming.”

“Me too,” Ismelda sighed dreamily. “My wolf is being picky. She wants to wait to see how the guys do on the hunt before she’ll narrow our choices down.”

Amber stepped back, letting her sister go first as the PA clipped on her microphone. “At least your wolves are giving you something. Mine is refusing to look until mating season starts.”
