“I don’t know.”
“I thought you said he was gone?”
“I did. And, he is. But, he’s my father. I don’t want him to be.”
“Do you know where he went?”
“No. And, there’s something else. Something you might know about.”
“What?” I asked concerned by the look in his eyes.
Cage’s eyes darted around looking for anyone listening. When he didn’t find anyone, he opened his mouth struggling for words.
“I know you said you were that thing you are.”
I rocked back onto my heels. I hadn’t expected this to be what he was asking about, but of course it was. I settled myself and prepared for whatever he might say next.
“It’s called a wolf shifter. What about it?”
“The articles I read said that you were the only one. Is that true?”
“There’s only me,” I said stoically.
“Do you know if dragons exist?”
Of all of the things I had prepared myself to hear, that was not one of them.
“Dragons? No. They’re made up,” I explained insulted that he would have made such a leap. Wolves were real
things that existed, dragons were not. The next thing he would ask me about were fairies.
“Are you sure? Because I think there’s one dead in my living room. And I think it could be my father.”
“What?”
“Yeah.
Dragons are real. What the hell is going on, Quin?”
Cage looked at me with such desperation that I knew he wasn’t making this up. Dragons? Dragon shifters? It couldn’t be. Of course…
“Your father’s eyes…”
“What?”
“When he threatened me, his eyes shifted. They became inky black and they felt like they were swallowing me.”
“Then it’s true. That thing is my father. I didn’t want it to be but somehow I knew it was.”
“You say it’s dead in your cabin?”
“I think it is. It’s been laying there since I got back from the hospital. I’ve kicked and punched it and it hasn’t moved. At the same time, it’s not decaying. I don’t know what’s going on with it.”
“Can I see?” I asked knowing I was taking a risk. If it wasn’t dead and it was Cage’s father, it could come after me like it promised.
“Yeah, of course. And maybe when you see it, you could tell me what I am,” Cage said vulnerably.
Oh right! If Cage’s father is a dragon shifter, what did that make him? Could that be why I’m so drawn to him? Maybe I’ve been sensing his difference.
