As much as I wanted to rush there right then, we made arrangements to meet at his place the next morning, a Saturday. It was good because it gave me time to process everything. Dragon shifters? What had my father done to create me? Could I have as easily ended up with scales and wings?

I needed to talk to my father about this, but not yet. I needed more information. First I needed to make sure that what Cage was saying was true. After that, I had to figure out where it came from. Could I be from there to? Was everything my father told me about myself a lie?

Maybe I wasn’t the only wolf shifter to exist. What would that mean if it were true? And if Cage were a dragon shifter like his dad, what did that mean about us… if there was an “us”.

Didn’t he still have a girlfriend? He hadn’t mentioned her, but he never did unless I brought her up. I needed to know where I stood with him before risking the lives of everyone around me. I also needed a way to show him why he should be with me if he was still with her.

“I brought ice cream,” I told him when I arrived at his place the next day.

“You brought ice cream?” he asked me standing in front of his closed front door.

“And a few other things. Milk, juice, a couple of frozen pizzas, a couple of TV dinners… and ice cream.”

“So, you brought groceries?”

“You said your father was gone. I didn’t know who did the shopping. And I was already at the grocery store…”

“Getting ice cream…”

“Yeah. So, I figured why not pick up a few things. You could always just stick them in your freezer if you don’t want them.”

Cage chuckled. “Thank you. You’re gonna make it really hard for me to stop dreaming about you.”

“Who says I want you to?” I asked feeling my cheeks flush.

“Good point,” he said looking at me like he wanted to kiss me.

I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to kiss him too. But…

“Before we go any further or before I see whatever it is you want to show me, I need to know, what am I to you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Am I just a friend or a wolf shifter who might have answers? I could be putting my life in danger by doing this. I mean, I’ll probably still help you no matter what you say. But, I need to know.”

I stared at Cage feeling more naked than I had ever felt after a shift. I wanted to run and hide, but I wasn’t going to back off. Not this time. Even standing a foot from him, my heart ached to be closer. So, before whatever was about to happen next, I needed to know if he could ever love me.

Cage stared at me unflinching.

“That’s right. You don’t know.”

“Know what?” I asked practically shaking.

“Tasha and I broke up. Or, I guess it would be more accurate to say that she broke up with me.”

“She did. Why?”

“For the same reason I would have broken up with her if she hadn’t beat me to it. We’re both in love with someone else.”

I froze. Did he just say what I thought he did?

“Who’s that?”

Cage laughed. “Well, for Tasha, I’m pretty sure it’s Vi. For me, it’s… you.”

I stared at him. My wolf was going wild. I, on the other hand, didn’t know what to say.

“Oh.”
