Page 188 of His Hungry Wolf
“I promise you, he will,” Titus assured us and then led us back to his truck.
Along with my wolf’s body running hotter, the excretion of my fur had pushed most of the moisture away from my skin. Titus’s suggestion had been even better than I had first thought. How did he know so much about being a wolf shifter?
Arriving back at the truck I was hesitant to shift back into human form. I was going to miss the warmth of my fur. It was the first time I wasn’t counting the seconds before I could return.
But, when Cage opened the passenger door and took off his jacket, I did. It was clear that he wanted me back. And since I wanted nothing more than to return to his arms, I shifted.
After Cage put my wet pants on the heater vent in the back seat, he joined me up front. I cuddled against Cage’s warm body.
“You’re shivering,” Cage told me.
“I’m alright,” I assured him.
The truth was that I wasn’t sure it was from the cold. I had just shifted in front of someone who had acted like he saw shifts every day. Then I hiked back to the truck not wanting to return to human form. Now we were driving to someone who might have more answers about who and what I am than I’ve gotten in a lifetime. A lot was going on. It was overwhelming.
By the time we were making a right turn past Glen’s general store, I was, for the most part, feeling better. Lying in Cage’s arms helped.
The place we pulled up to was two-stories with white siding. If I were to picture the home of a small-town doctor, it would have been this. His office was a similarly looking detached building to the left of the main house but set further back.
Putting my pants back on, the chill from the water quickly returned. Still wearing Cage’s jacket, and having been blasted by the hot air in the truck, it didn’t affect me quite as much. Even with there being a slight breeze, I made it to the office without my fun bits freezing off. I was happy about that. I had barely started using them for their intended purpose. I didn’t want to lose them now.
“Dr. Tom?” Titus called bringing an older Latino man into the waiting room.
He was more serious-looking than his husband. He was also shaped differently. Whereas Glen was built like a teddy bear, Dr. Tom was more barrel-chested. Both looked like they enjoyed a good meal, though. This had to be what years of marital bliss in a small town looked like.
“Titus, what’s going on?” The man said in a slight Spanish accent.
“He’s a wolf shifter,” he said casually.
“And him?” Dr. Tom said pointing at Cage.
“Nothing as far as I can tell.”
Dr. Tom nodded and turned to me. “Quin, is it?”
“Yes,” I confirmed.
“Why don’t you join me in my office,” he said leading me back.
“He’s not going anywhere without me,” Cage said approaching the older man threateningly.
“I’ll be fine, Cage,” I assured him. “I think if they were out to hurt either of us, they would have done it by now.”
“He’s right,” Dr. Tom confirmed. “Don’t worry. He’ll be back in a few minutes. You can take a seat and wait,” he said before turning and pointing me into his examining room.
Behind the closed door, the doctor gestured for me to sit on the metal bed in the middle of the room.
“Have a seat,” he said before pulling up a chair in front of me.
I sat and looked at him awkwardly.
“So, you’re a wolf shifter. That wasn’t Glen’s guess. He was thinking you were a Fae.”
“What’s a Fae?” I asked quickly cutting him off.
“That’s what both Glen and I are. It’s a being that is more attuned to the magic surrounding us.”
“The magic surrounding us?” I said more doubtfully than I meant it to sound.
