I looked at Cage who was looking at me as curiously as Titus was.
“I was just wondering. Listen, thanks for showing us around.”
“Of course. And maybe I’ll see you at East Tennessee next semester,” he said with a smile.
“Maybe,” I told him before ushering Cage out of the truck and inside.
“Why were you asking about the busboy from last night,” he asked me as we crossed the living room?”
“How was your tour?” Dr. Sonya said crossing from the kitchen. “Oh, what happened to your shoes?”
“There was an incident at the lake,” Cage said offering a vague explanation so I wouldn’t have to.
“And you lost your shoes?” She asked me.
Dr. Tom had told me that she was human. But wasn’t she also one of the people Dr. Tom had been using to figure out what I was? Didn’t that mean she knew that Fae and shifters existed?
After Answering her question with a shrug she looked at my wet pants knowingly.
“I have something warm you can wear if you need it. Also, Cali and I are about to have dinner. Would you like to join us?”
“Thank you, but we have plans,” I said interjecting.
Cage looked at me confused.
“Yes, unfortunately, we have plans,” Cage confirmed.
“But, I will borrow a pair of shoes until we can pick something up at the store.”
“I’ll get them.”
“Thanks,” I told her before pushing Cage toward the stairs.
“I’ll leave them in front of your door,” she told us before we were gone.
“Do we actually have plans? Because, I have to tell you, I’m pretty hungry. I’m definitely gonna need to eat first.”
“We are. We’re just gonna eat at the diner… after I pick up some new clothes.”
I told Cage everything Dr. Tom had said to me and what I thought it meant. Cage was as startled by it as I was.
“So, this other world has always existed.”
“He said he was like 150 years old.”
“I can’t believe it. And my dad is a dragon shifter. Did he say what we were supposed to do with his body? Like, is there a special ritual or something? And, how are we supposed to tell if he’s… you know, dead?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t get the chance to ask him any of that. He was throwing a lot of information at me. I was more concerned about hinting that you might be one too.”
“If I am one, then he said I would be dangerous.”
“Cage, I know you. You’re not.”
“What if I am? What if some people take longer to shift and then once they do, their personality changes?”
“I shift. Does my personality change?”
“But you’ve been a shifter your entire life. If I’m what my father was, then who knows what will happen to me?”
