“You don’t have a scent.”
“I don’t have a scent? Is that weird?”
“Everyone has a scent. Doesn’t matter how much you shower, to a wolf shifter it’s always there. For you, there’s nothing. It’s like if you met someone and you couldn’t hear them. They could clap. They could scream. And, no matter what, nothing.”
“That would be pretty disturbing,” I realized.
“Yeah. Especially for wolves since they rely so much on their sense of smell. But, for whatever reason, my wolf can’t get enough of you.”
“Okay, I don’t know what that means.”
“It means that I really like being around you.”
“Because I’m different?”
“Because you’re you,” he said with smile.
“Which is what?”
“I don’t know. Something magical.”
I looked at Nero confused. “When you say magical, do you mean, “Oh that guy is magical?” Or, are you saying that I’m a witch or a demon or something?”
“I’m not sure,” he said with empathy.
“Okay! This is… a lot!”
Nero reached across the table and placed his hand on mine. It made me feel better.
“How am I supposed to figure this out?” I asked him.
“I’ve been thinking about that.”
“And?”
“Cage and Quin just got the keys to their new place. They’re gonna be moving my mother in this weekend. They need me to move my stuff. How would you feel about going up with me?”
I froze. “Wait a minute. If you’re a wolf shifter and Cage is your brother, does that mean he’s one too?”
Nero looked hesitant to answer but did.
“Yeah, that’s what it means.”
“So, you, Quin, and your brother are all wolf shifters.”
“Yep.”
“Wow! And, the people where you grew up?”
“That’s a little more complicated.”
“What do you mean?”
“I grew up in a mixed community. There are a lot of people like me. But there are also humans and fae.”
“What’s a fae?”
“It’s kind of like a fairy but real. They’re people who have access to magic. There’s one back home I can introduce you to. Cage is organizing something for this weekend that he’ll be at. He’ll have a better idea what’s going on with you.”
