“Not necessarily,” Dr. Tom said. “It is the ability to access magic that makes a person fae, not what their parents can do.”

“So, I could still be completely normal.”

“It’s possible.”

“How do I know for sure?”

“I think the spell that’s on you is doing more than just dampening your scent. It’s cutting you off from whatever potential you have.”

“Can you take it off of him?” Nero asked.

“I wish I could.”

“Sure, you do,” Nero said not believing him for a second.

“Nero, you seem to think I don’t have your interest or the interest of this town at heart.”

“You really think keeping my brother from me was in my best interest?”

The doctor pointed at me.

“His parents were avid campers who burned to death. Do you really think there’s a chance they hadn’t put their campfire out? There are things out there that want us dead. All of us. What I did, I did for you, your mother, and everyone you know and love.”

“Right, just like how you put a spell on the town that only effects wolves and has prevented the shifters here from forming a pack.”

“That has nothing to do with my spell,” the doctor said allowing his emotionless mask to slip.

“Really? Then why do you think it is that there has never been a pack here?”

“Because shifter alphas aren’t made. They’re born. Yeah, someone can claim to be the leader of a pack. But, they will never have a true alpha’s power.”

“The ability to make wolf shifters do what they say?” Nero said realizing it.

“Yes.”

“Cage. He’s a born alpha.”

“I think he is.”

“And by some coincidence, he was kidnapped and you hid his existence.”

Dr. Tom straightened up and slipped his stone-faced mask back on.

“I couldn’t have known.”

“Of course. Because how would a powerful fae like you be able to tell something like that. Even though someone else clearly could.”

“You don’t know that that was why he was taken.”

“Right. It’s all just a coincidence. Kendall, I think we should go.”

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to. I knew I would have more questions even if they weren’t coming to mind. But, Nero needed to get out of here and I wanted to be where he was.

“Thank you,” I told the doctor before following Nero out.

Outside and headed to the truck, Nero said,

“Well, that was a bunch of horseshit. Sorry I wasted your time.”
