“You didn’t,” I said shocked he would think that.

“Right,” he said grabbing the truck’s door handle and getting in.

I hurried to the passenger side and joined him.

“Seriously, Nero, that was very helpful.”

“How? He didn’t tell you anything that we didn’t know when we got here.”

“Maybe you knew it, but I didn’t. Nero, everything about this world is new to me. Someone cast a spell on me and a dragon shifter might have killed my biological parents because they were fae. I can barely process it all,” I admitted.

“After a lifetime of feeling different from everyone around me, I might be supernatural. I might be able to do magic. Just the idea of it blows my mind. And you were the one who helped me realize it,” I said suddenly seeing him in a new light.

As soon as I did, I shut up. I thought I was falling for him before, but it didn’t compare to what I felt for him now.

Cage reached across the bench seat for my hand. I pulled it away before he could touch it. I wasn’t sure why I had done it, but I had. He leaned back disappointed.

“I’m sorry,” I told him.

“That’s okay,” he said slowly withdrawing.

“No, I didn’t mean it like that. I just need a moment to wrap my head around everything.”

“I understand. Sometimes I forget that not everyone grew up knowing the things I did. This is probably a lot for you.”

“It’s not a typical Saturday,” I said forcing a smile.

“Right. Did you want to head back to the house? We’re close.”

“I need to walk. Is there anywhere we could go where I could just think?”

“I did promise you a hike,” he suggested sweetly.

“And I am wearing my hiking boots.”

Nero chuckled remembering our previous conversation.

“Right. I know the perfect place.”

Nero wasn’t wrong. The hike he chose was the most beautiful place I could have imagined. The only sounds were that of the wind rustling leaves and eventually the sound of waterfalls.

“Last year it was frozen by now,” he told me.

Despite how long it took us to get there, I wasn’t yet ready to speak. So instead, we stood staring at it. Nero put his arm around me and pulled me to him. Pressed against him I felt safe. My world had just flipped upside down. But with him by my side, everything felt upright.

Eventually leaving there, we did another hike. By the time we were headed back to the truck, the sun was setting. It was only then that I slid across the bench seat and buried myself in his embrace. His scent was intoxicating. I never wanted him to let me go.

Pulling up to the house, we parked. Following Nero inside, I was about to following him upstairs when he stopped me.

“Can you give me a few minutes?”

I stopped unsure what was going on. Was he upset about something? I had been lost in thought all day and had assumed that Nero was giving me space. But he was as quiet as I had been. Had what the doctor said about Cage affected him in some way I was missing?

“Of course,” I told him disappointed that he wanted to be apart while I still wanted his arms around me.

After watching Nero ascend the stairs, I joined Quin, Cage, and his mother at the kitchen island.

“Hey! How did it go?” Quin asked me cheerfully.
