Mac shoved his hand away.

“Anytime. Anywhere,” he said with fire in his eyes.

“Let me catch you off magic ground and we’ll settle this fast.”

“Yeah?” Mac asked amused. He walked back to his fancy sports car. “Don’t let your mouth write a check you can’t cash.”

“Come find me!” Nero asked spreading his arms inviting a fight.

Big Mac got into his car and started it. “You don’t have to ask me twice,” he said before pulling off.

Nero and I watched him go. My skin crawled in a way it hadn’t in years. I felt like I was going to explode. I remembered this feeling. It was what anger felt like before I could shift and let my wolf burn it off. My face felt like it was on fire.

“What the fuck is magic ground?” Nero asked me.

“You got me. Somewhere we can’t shift?” I said stating the obvious.

“Fuck!” Nero said putting his shirt back on and heading to his truck.

I followed him taking the passenger seat. Although I had it during the day, he didn’t like anyone else driving it. It was the same one he drove since high school. It had sentimental value.

“So, what was that about?” I asked him as we pulled into the darkness.

“He’s just an asshole Taxi Squad player. He’s jealous that he can’t get a spot on the team.”

“Taxi Squad?”

“Yeah, the team hires people for us to practice against. It’s supposed to be for developing players, but he’s been stuck there for 6 years. He thinks he can take that out on me because I’m a rookie.”

“Do you think he’s a shifter?”

“He knew about us. Maybe.”

“Did you notice how he smelled?”

“You mean like shit on a hot highway.”

“I guess.”

“Yeah, I noticed.”

“You ever smell anything like that before?”

“There are a lot of things I never smelt before around here. I’m not gonna back down because some asshole smells funny.”

The two of us fell into silence as we drove the lonely dark road back to Nero’s place. He didn’t want to be in town. He said it was too busy for him. Coming from the small town we did, I understood. Besides, living out in the middle of nowhere allowed him to shift and take a run whenever he wanted. We were just about there when…

“What the fuck was that?” Nero shouted after the truck rocked.

My heart pounded against the inside of my chest. Something had hit us. I looked through the back windshield. There was nothing but darkness. When the truck jolted again, we realized it was coming from above.

“Shit!” Nero screamed before swerving.

That didn’t shake off whatever had grabbed us and the truck’s engine revved as it lost contact with the ground. When the roof of the cabin peeled open like a can, our wheels slammed back to earth. We were being attacked. But by what?

Losing control as the tires touched the road, the truck shot to the side and plowed toward a tree. Nero couldn’t stop it. Raking the wheel, the truck spun. Seeing the trunk rushing at us, we stopped with a jolt that nearly sent us through the windshield.

Shaken, we looked up. Above us was the sky. Whatever it was had torn the truck to shreds. Everything in me told me to shift and run. I didn’t know what to do. I got my answer when massive wings twenty feet in length descended out of nowhere and shoved its humongous claws into the cabin after us.
