Page 384 of His Hungry Wolf
Soon, Titus and I were the only ones left.
“Thank you,” I told him still lost in his arms.
“You’re welcome. Anything for you,” he replied.
Never was I surer that he meant it.
“Titus, could I ask you for a favor? It’s kind of weird.”
“Of course,” he said turning to me as I pulled out of his arms.
I could barely look him in the eyes.
“I’m going to my Grandmother’s will reading tomorrow and my parents think I’m engaged. There’s a whole story to why they do. But, long story short, do you think you could go with me and pretend to be my fiancé?”
Chapter 4
Titus
“You want me to pretend to be your fiancé?” I asked as my wolf perked up.
“Yeah. It will just be pretend. I’m asking because my parents saw me get engaged and they already don’t think much of me. So if I show up there without a fiancé, it will confirm every negative thing they’ve ever said.”
“I’ll do it,” I said not needing to hear anymore.
“You will?” he said with the brightest smile he had had all night.
“Of course. You know I’d do anything for you. But, if your parents saw you get engaged, won’t they know I’m not Seymour?”
Lou’s light dimmed. “You knew.”
“I did. I saw.”
“I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you,” he said sliding back into my arms.
“I understand. It’s hard to admit a mistake.”
He pulled away. “I didn’t say I made a mistake.”
I laughed. “But, didn’t you? If you didn’t, I don’t think you would be asking me to be your seat-filler.”
“He can’t go with me because he has a game,” he corrected.
“Then why did you hide it from me or ask me to invite him tonight?”
“I didn’t know what you were organizing,” he admitted. “Putting whether or not I would have invited him aside, there was no way I could have guessed it would be all of this. It was pretty mind-blowing.”
Hearing Lou’s words sent a warm feeling dancing through me. My wolf wanted to come out and run. We both liked knowing I had made him happy.
“Now about that other thing. There could be some debate about whether getting engaged was a mistake. No decision is perfect. But it wasn’t like I was batting off better offers.”
“Maybe if you had waited a second before answering, you would have gotten one,” I told him remembering how I watched him say yes with a bouquet of roses in my hand.
“Would I have? From who?” Lou asked staring into my eyes wanting me to say it.
As much as I wanted to and as sure as I was about him, there was no way I wanted the day I declared my love for him to be the day of his grandmother’s memorial. Besides, I was exhausted! I had been working non-stop on this from the moment he told me he wanted a game night. I could barely stand up I was so tired.
I wanted what I hoped to be the first day of our lives together to be more than just the aftermath of his grief. And I wanted to be emotionally present for it. I wanted the date to be as special for me as I hoped it would be for him.
