Page 34 of Love is So Mean

I shake my head and call Josh, the chef so that I could concentrate on something else. Before Enrique showed up, I was sure he was going to say no. I took a calculated risk, one that the expression all over his face disapproves of. It’s fine, after he gets me pregnant, he can figure out what he wants to do with his time and space.

Instead of dwelling on everything else, I choose to focus on the numbers of the Spa relaunching and seeing the feedback of the influences and investors. Nothing else matters anymorefor now. I was so concentrated that I didn’t notice when Josh walked in or heard him do what I asked of him.

“It’s all ready, Yasmeena. Did you want me to set the table?”

“No, it’s not necessary. Just bring it to Enrique’s room. Thank you.”

Josh doesn’t ask why or anything like that, he just does what I asked. After sending a few more emails, I shut my computer down. I walk upstairs to my room first, grabbing my purse and anything else I need then I walk a bit further to Enrique’s room. The hairdresser and the stylist are speaking with him as eats his breakfast. They continue as I walk in. I walk over to Enrique’s plate as he gives me an indifferent expression through the mirror. I grab a bacon strip, biting into it then blankly meet his eyes.

“I’ll be waiting on the jet, there’ll be a car out for you when you’re done.”

I walk away, calling Matthew to see if he’s ready to be picked up.

HALF AN HOUR later, Enrique and Jeeves stroll onto the jet choosing to sit wherever they’d like, joining Matthew and Sharice. 5 minutes later, we take off to Vancouver Island, it’s a beautiful place but we’re not here to admire the scenery, are we?

As we settle in the sky, I call Matthew and Jeeves over where Sharice is sitting with me. They both sit across from us and I place two folders in front of them

“These are NDAs for what is about to happen today and I’d like you two to read over everything. Once they are signed, you will be privy to what’s happening in Vancouver Island.”

“You’re giving me a promotion?” Matthew asks.

“Yes, because things are changing in the office and I’m going to be leaning on you more. But I don’t need you around all the time.”

“But zeros are a bit higher.” He says.

“They are.”

“Okay.” Matthew puts his paper down and grabs the pen I provided, signing it without hesitation.

Jeeves takes his time and I wait until he’s ready. He doesn’t say anything as he signs, handing me the papers back. I hand the papers to Sharice and she nods.

“Okay, so we need two witnesses because Enrique and I are getting married today.”

Matthew coughs, choking on the water he was drinking. “What?”

“I’ll give you two a minute or rather the rest of this ride to process.”

After that, it gets quiet on the jet again. The pain is back but it’s still dull. Not wanting to drink my medicine in front of everyone and have them ask me a bunch of questions, I grab my purse and head to the cabin. I lock the door and take the pill along with water. It takes a bit for the pain to subside and when it does, I realize that I’m on the bed, in a fetal position reminding me of when I was younger… when I wanted to escape something, I’d do just that.

Sighing, I shut my eyes. Feeling more exhausted today than I’ve been the past couple of days. As fast as I fell asleep, that’s how quickly I was woken up by a series of knocks.

“Yasmeena, we’re here.” Sharice lets me know.

Slowly, I get off the bed and take a moment, just to myself. I can’t believe I’m doing this. Getting married without the press, without my family and with my employee that is now the COO of my company. I can’t question myself because I don’t believe in making mistakes when it comes to a calculated decision so I forgo that thought in the back of my mind.

I open the door and Sharice’s brown eyes stare into mine.

“What happened?” she asks, whispering.

“What do you mean?”

“You were moaning and groaning in pain just now.” she whispers again. “Do you want to go see a doctor?”

“It was probably a nightmare. Let’s go.”

Without much more to do, we make our way to the venue in the car. Once we’re there, Matthew and Jeeves stand as our witnesses, Sharice as our lawyer and the person who got our marriage license to present to the officiator, and the officiator himself. He smiles at both of us but his smile drops as he sees the blank expression on my face. I don’t hear a word he says as he talks about marriage, love, life and whatever else. We exchange our vows in mirroring monotone voices and we ignore the officiator when he tells us to kiss as he pronounces us as husband and wife.

We walk out as soon as it's over.
