“Absolutely.” Still no smile and pleasant reactions. Just empty words.

Damn, I hated this cold interaction. If working with her was going to be like this all the time, I’d lose my mind. “You’re sure. It’s two full days of travel and we won’t return until Friday.”

“Yes, that’s fine.” She answered me without any hesitation. She simply delivered her responses with zero emotions. If I didn’t figure out how to be near her without eliciting this type of response, this trip would be miserable for both of us.

“Okay. Meet me at the office at seven o'clock Wednesday morning. I’ll grab the files we need, and the car will be ready as soon as you arrive.”

For the first time since returning to the conversation, she gave me a closed lip smile. It was forced and I could see the tension on your face. “That sounds perfect. I look forward to it, Logan.”

“Well then, since that’s settled, I’m going to take Madison back upstairs, get her settled in Bill’s old office, and take care of the hiring paperwork.” We said our goodbyes and I watched Madison walk away.

This trip was going to be loads of fun.Not.

I sank back into my chair and dropped my head to the table.

Madison Hart. What the fuck am I going to do?

I long ago accepted that I’d never see her again. My first year of college had been hell. Every part of me ached and longed for her. I came home every weekend that first year in the hopes that she’d visit with her grandma. She never did.

I’d promised myself if she showed up, I’d tell her how I really felt about her. We’d given each other everything that last night. She took my heart and my love, and I never got it back.

Now I was her boss.

Chapter 3

Madison

By the time I walkedup the stairs to my apartment, it was a little after five.

After meeting with Logan, Althea insisted on taking me to lunch. With all the questions she’d asked me about the last fifteen years of my life, lunch took up a couple hours. It felt more like an interrogation than catching up with a long-lost friend.

It was close to 2:00 pm by the time we made it back to the office and I still had a ton of paperwork to fill out. Meeting with HR took me forever and then Althea insisted on showing me around and getting me settled into my new office.

Right next to Logan.

The open concept glass walls that I’d admired when I first arrive were now going to be torturous for me. Every day I'd be in the office, I would see him through the glass wall that separated us. Our desks were placed on the opposite wall from each other and positioned so that a simple glance up would result in our eyes joining.Pure torture.
