“Let’s go,” I said as I walked out of my closet pulling on the sweater over my leggings. I moved to grab the sneakers from Jord, planning to put them on downstairs, when the sound of glass breaking right behind me, startled me.
I went to turn to look what had happened when Jordan threw himself at me and dropped us both to the ground. I screamed in fright and fought to breathe as I lay with his weight pressing me down. Was he hurt? Why wasn’t he moving?
“Jordan?” I cried.
“Sshh. Stay down. That was a bullet. They’re trying to draw you out so they can take you out,” he told me as he adjusted his bodyso he was covering me, but I could see his face above me. “Just try and breathe for me, babe.”
“Where did the bullet go. Did it hit you?” I panicked.
“No. We’re lucky the guy is a crappy shot. It went wide and landed in the wall beside us,” he explained.
“Jordan?” I heard Kane yell up the stairs and I allowed myself another breath of relief that he was close and still alive.
“Kane! Someone just tried to take Addy out. They shot through the window!” Jordan yelled.
“Stay where you are I’m coming up!” Kane yelled, then he was in the hallway, looking in the doorway to us. “Are either of you hurt?” he demanded.
“No, we’re good. Guy’s a shit shot, but we need to get Addy out of here,” Jordan answered as I just lay there fighting to breathe and not lose it completely.
Kane looked around the corner of the door with one quick and fast glance, and instantly another bullet was fired, this one hitting something glass above us, the tiny pink fragments, and some liquid raining down over the floor near us. I cried out and covered my head, pressing tighter into Jordan.
“It’s okay, angel. They can’t get to you there,” Kane told me more calmly.
“What the fuck’s going on?” Jordan hissed.
“The explosions out front were to make us all move around. They must have a sniper out there waiting to take Addy out. I called local PD and our security are chasing down the guys who were at the gates.”
“A sniper,” I squeaked. “This is insane. How is this my life?”
“Addy, I need you to focus. I need you to come to me, okay? You have to stay down flat, just like you are now. I want you to slide over to me. There’s no windows he can see out here and we can get you downstairs.”
“I can’t,” I gasped. I was shaking so hard and frozen with fear all at once.
“You can, princess. You can do anything. All you have to do is move a few feet to Kane, and then you’ll be safe,” Jordan told me confidently.
“What about you?” I whimpered.
“I’m gonna be right behind you.”
“O-okay,” I agreed reluctantly. Jordan lifted himself just enough for me to slide out from beneath him, and I slid across the floor and over the smashed glass, and what I knew now to be perfume, judging by the flowery scent. Once I got within arm’s reach of Kane, who had dropped to his knees right outside the door, he grabbed my hand firmly and pulled me right out of the room and into his arms.
“Fuck, angel. We really need to end this shit. I can’t keep almost losing you,” he growled as he held me tightly against him.
I turned as I heard glass scraping behind me, and moved quickly so Jordan could get out of the room too. As soon as he was on his feet, he pressed himself against my back, and Kane was at my front, the both of them just holding me between them.
“We need to get her down to the basement, then I’m going to hunt this fucker down,” Kane said as he stepped back andpulled his gun from the small of his back, releasing the cartridge, looking it over and sliding it back in again.
“No! I don’t want you going out there, especially not alone!” I told him.
“Like I just said, we have to end this, Addy. Catching one of these guys and finding out who is sending them is the only card we have right now.” Kane explained, and I hated that he sounded right. I didn’t want him risking his life for me.
“We need to move. I don’t like her out in the open like this. That damned bullet was too fucking close,” Jordan rumbled as he pulled me tighter against his body and headed for the stairs. Kane went down first, moving slowly and pointing his gun out in front of him, Jordan and I right behind him, Jordan all but carrying me down the stairs as I continued to stumble,
We crossed the living room, and luckily the heavy curtains were pulled closed so no one could see us pass through it. When we got to the door down to the lower level, Kane stopped and stepped back.
“Keep her and the others in the gym until Ash or I give the all clear,” Kane said as he nodded to the door.
“Kane. Please don’t go out there,” I whimpered.
