I know eventually, we’ll be out in our hometown, and people will whisper and come up to us. That’s okay. By then, I would’ve soaked up alone time with Madelyn. And eventually, people will stop caring.

“The company wasn’t bad either,” she winks.

“I agree.” I twirl her around and pull her flush to my body. Madelyn gasps at the sudden movement. Her hand lands on my chest, just as I planned. Cupping her cheek, I smile down at her.

We gaze into each other’s eyes in silence. Her parted lips lure me in, her soft breath hitting my chin. I lean down and kiss her tentatively at first. Madelyn wraps her arm around my waist, flattening her palm on my back. The feeling is a combination of possessiveness and wanting to keep me close.

I move my lips over her, sliding my tongue along the seam of her lips until she opens for me. When her tongue peeks out to tangle with mine, my body tightens. The hand holding her cheek slides into her hair.

Our kiss is measured and slow, lazily tasting her and stealing as many kisses as I can. I’m in no rush to end it. I release her hand and grip her hip, keeping her body pressed against mine. Her curves are luscious, and I run my hand over them as if I were driving down a winding road with the windows down and in no hurry to get anywhere. Madelyn is my ride; the destination doesn’t matter if I’m with her.

That thought snaps me. Is it too soon to think things like that? I slow the kiss, pecking her lips a few times before breaking away and staring into her glassy eyes. Desire is written all over her expression, but we won’t go further than this tonight.

“Wow…” she breathes out.

“Yeah,” I agree. My thumb brushes along her cheekbone, and she closes her eyes.

“But we’re out on the street, and I don’t want anyone to witness our moment.”

Her eyes soften upon hearing my words. “Thank you.” She smiles, holding the side of my face. I turn my head and drop a kiss on her palm. Her hand twitches, and she giggles.

“Your stubble tickles.”

I wonder if it’ll tickle other parts of her body. I take a deep breath, not thinking about that right now. I shave the days I volunteer at the firehouse and let my beard grow in between, so I already have a bit of stubble from not shaving this morning. I’ll have to prove that theory when I have a prolonged break from volunteering.

Madelyn cranes her head around my body, and her eyes light up.

“What’s that?” She points to a spot behind me.

I turn around and see an arcade.

“Let’s go.” She drags me toward there, not even bothering to ask. I love that she doesn’t. I love that she just guides and makes decisions without wondering if I’ll want to.

We walk into the dim place, and I’m transported to the nineties. The carpet is black with irregularly shaped stars in fluorescent green and red that are likely shining from a blacklight somewhere.

Different arcade games line the walls. It isn’t full, likely because it’s a Sunday evening. I’m actually surprised to see it’s open.

“Skee ball!” Madelyn calls out, running over to the game. I follow, chuckling to myself.

“I challenge you to a game,” she says, her voice all business.

“Challenge, huh?” I raise a brow and place my hands in my pockets, looking between her and the game.

“Yup. If I win, I get to plan our second date.” She bounces on her toes.

“Second date?” I lift my brows, hiding my smile.

“Uh…yeah.” Her lips press together, and her nose scrunches. “I thought…”

I laugh, tossing my head back. “Trust me. There will be a second date.”

”Asshole,” she slaps my chest.

“If I win, I get to kiss you again,” I add the terms to our friendly competition.

Madelyn tilts her head before leaning up on her toes and whispering in my ear, “I was gonna let you do that anyway.” She pats my chest and winks when she moves back.

I groan, wanting to kiss her right now but holding back. “Let’s play,” I demand.
