Chapter 9
Lyla
Walking into our townhome, I spot Kandace sitting at the table with her laptop open. That is our homework spot. I set my bookbag on the floor causing it to make a slam noise.
Kandace looks up at me. Her expression grows curious. It is like she knows I have gone and done something unthinkable. My friend might know me too well.
She asks, “What did you do?”
Here we go.
Acting surprised by her comment, I answer, “What makes you say that?”
“There’s something fishy about you. You better spill it.”
“There’s nothing to spill.”
“I don’t believe you,” she says skeptically.
“Whatever!”
Kandace continues to ask, “How did the talk go with Professor James?”
I smile just thinking of what we did in his office.
She squints and says, “You’re smiling. That must be a good thing.”
I laugh, “The grade talk got heated.”
“What did he say?”
“He says I’m not putting my best effort toward my pieces.”
“Really?”
“I guess he sees a lot of potential in me. He told me I needed to act like I want to be a reporter. Then he proceeded to tell me that I am just trying to get by. It really pissed me off.”
“Okay, why the smile?” She pauses, “Holy shit. You fucked him again.”
“Are you serious? You can just figure that out like that?”
“It’s kind of obvious when you are smiling yet you are pissed.”
Putting my hands up, I grin, “You caught me.”
“Girl, I love you. But you’re so dumb at times. You know he is your professor. That is not good.”
I sigh, “I know. I just don’t know what came over me. We were bickering back and forth. The next thing I know, I jumped him, and we were on the floor fucking.”
She shakes her head and questions, “On school property?”
I nod, “Yeah.”
“Girl, you’re insane.”
“I know. You’re going to think I’m crazier.”
“What now?”
