“Perry Schofield. He had braces that cut my lip.I thought it was going to be all romantic.Instead, the inside of my mouth got cut up by metal. Not the best first kiss ever.”

Brant started laughing.“Nice.Was that the only lake boy you ever kissed?”

“Nope.I had some hard core weeklong romances when the campers came to town.”

“I think I might be jealous.”

“Don’t be.None of them can hold a candle to you.”

“I’m better than a geeky, brace-face, acned teen?”

It was CC’s turn to laugh.“Absolutely, Snaps.”

When they arrived back in town, CC told him to park behind the café next to her car.“You won’t be able to find anywhere to park close to the town square,” she said.

They walked around the building and into the crowd of people already dancing in the street.Mason’s band, The Marina Boys, were on stage playingSweet Home Alabama.Like they’d been doing since CC was a little kid, when the word Alabama was sung, everyone in the street yelled, “Oklahoma!”at the top of their lungs.

Brant smiled.“This is great.”

“It really is, isn’t it?”

All of a sudden, his eyes widened.“Please tell me that isn’t Kelda flashing her boobs at all those old geezers!”

CC looked where Brant’s finger was pointing.Sure enough, Kelda had her t-shirt hiked above her head, her saggy, ninety-one year old breasts on display.Around her neck were shiny, plastic beads in varying shades of red, white, and blue.“Guess she’s making Fourth of July into her own personal Mardi Gras,” CC said, chuckling.

“I can’t unsee that.Ever.” CC laughed even harder when she saw Brant had his hands over his eyes like they were burning.

“I can show you mine right now if you’d like.Just to get the image out of your head.I can’t promise no one else will see them, though.”

Brant’s hands flew off his face and his eyes popped open.“No, thanks.I’ll look later.Don’t want you to give any of those old men heart attacks or anything.”

“Don’t want them looking?”

“I’m just thinking you won’t get your dance,” he said with a wink.

The band switched to a slow tune and CC took his hand.“Ooooh, I love this song.Let’s go!”She ran into the middle of the street and wrapped her arms around Brant’s neck.Smiling, he pulled her in close and placed his hand on her hips.

“I know you’ll be surprised, but I don’t know this song, either, Freckles,” he said into her hair.

CC took her head off his chest and smiled up at him.“It’s Jason Aldean. You Make It Easy. It’s fairly new so I’ll let you off the hook.”

Brant grinned and pulled her closer.Mason and his band sung the lyrics CC had fallen in love with the first time she’d heard it.A woman making it easy for a man to love her.CC felt like the lyrics were speaking to her soul.Brant was so good for her.

“I’m with Mr.Aldean.How ’bout we stay in bed all day tomorrow, Freckles?”he whispered in her ear, sending shivers down her spine.

“Tempting, but I have an appointment with Sadie at twelve-thirty.”

“It’s Sunday!You can’t reschedule with Sadie?”

“Not if I want to live to see another day.Hernaturalred hair needs some help looking natural,” she whispered.

“Ah…gotcha.”

“And I told Breckin I’d put some more highlights in her hair tomorrow so she’d be all pretty for her baby shower.Right now she feels like a fat cow.”

Brant smiled.“Fair enough.I guess I need to rest to prepare myself for Monday at the clinic.”

“Absolutely. No telling how many sex injuries Kelda and Burt have had since you’ve been gone.”

Brant rested his head on hers.“Don’t mention it.I might just never go back.”

CC started laughing.“Then don’t think about it.One more dance?”

She felt him grin.“One more dance.”
