CC grinned and dunked a stick in ranch dressing.“Oh, but I do.”

Brant grabbed a stick of his own and stuffed it in his mouth.

“Don’t think that stuffing your face will get you off the hook,” she said.“You know you want to tell me.”

“Tell you what?”Sadie walked up to their table, their orders in her hands. The special of the day was her Cajun catfish with spicy crawfish tails and man…was it delicious. The only thing CC could say she liked about summer was the fresh fish regularly on the menu at Sadie’s.

“Tell me how his first day was,” she replied.“He thinks stuffing his face with zucchini sticks is going to save him.”

“I heard he gave Marty a prescription for some little blue pills to keep Miss Madge happy.Rumor has it he was having a hard time with…well, something being hard.”

CC grinned and looked at Brant.“Seriously?”

“That was just the first patient,” he said with a sigh.“June also brought Rambo in for another checkup—”

“Wait. Why didn’t she take him to Gretchen at Sophie’s Haven?”

“Apparently she won’t see Rambo anymore.Says June keeps making up illnesses and is suffering from Munchausen syndrome in regard to her donkey.”

“Munch what?”Sadie asked, setting their plates down and scooting CC over in her seat.

“A disease where you make up illnesses for yourself or someone you love.In this case, she loves a donkey,” he replied.

CC shrugged.“If the shoe fits. What else?”

“Just a couple of puking kids—” Brant quit talking and shook his head.

“What?”

“Remember what Kelda was doing at the dance last night?”

“Showing her hooters to men for red, white, and blue beads?”CC asked, taking a bite of her fish.Damn…that was delicious.

“Yeah.I got an up close and personal encounter with them.Apparently Kelda didn’t put on any insect repellant before she staring raising her shirt. The mosquitoes where drawn to her tits like a moth to a flame. She looked like she had the mumps. It was awful.”

CC almost choked on the Coke she was drinking.“Please tell me you’re joking.”

“I wish I was,” he said, shaking his head and shivering.“Then she made me rub the prescription strength cortisone on them because she didn’t want tomiss a spot,” he said, finger-quoting the last few words.“And then told me I could tell everyone, HIPPA be damned, because she got the hot doctor in town to feel her up.”

Sadie started laughing so hard she was crying. She had to take her purple glasses off her face and wipe the tears escaping her eyes.“Oh.My.Lord.I can’t even—”

CC snorted.“Oh, Kelda.Kelda, Kelda, Kelda.”

Brant shook his head again.“I don’t think I’ll ever recover.”

All of a sudden, his phone beeped.“Excuse me for a second, ladies,” he said.“I have to make a phone call.”

“Everything okay with your mom?”CC asked, worry in her voice. She just got him back. She felt like he was on the verge of leaving.Every time the phone rang CC felt a little bit of dread in the pit of her stomach.

“Yeah, everything is fine with Mom.I just have to take this.”

CC nodded.“Okay.But I’m not sorry if you come back and all your crawfish tails are gone.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“These suckers are pretty tasty,” she said, sliding one off her fork and into her mouth.

“Oh, hush,” Sadie said.“I won’t let her eat your food, honey. You go make your phone call.I’ll bring you some more if she eats them.”
