Brant grinned at her again, big dimples appearing on both his cheeks.Great.Chocolate eyesanddimples? Why did the universe hate her?

“You still didn’t answer my question about why you’re here,” she said.

The sigh slipped from Brant’s lips.“Promise you won’t be mad and hate me again.”

Something told CC she wasn’t going to like his answer.“It depends on what you’re about to tell me.”

“Karen backed out of the date.”

“What? But she paid all that money…”

“Money Wyatt gave her so she’d win the bid on me.”

“What?”CC heard her voice squeak.

“He felt sorry for me when he heard about all the money June Adams had stashed away to bid on me.Apparently, she has a little crush.”

CC snorted.“You brought that on yourself when you saved her donkey.”

“I didn’tsaveit,” Brant rolled his eyes.“I just stitched up…oh, never mind. The thing is, Wyatt took pity on me and gave Karen a lot of money to win the bid.”

“So?What does that have anything to do with me?”

“Because she backed out of the date.Apparently she doesn’t date anyone.”

“Again, I say…so?That doesn’t pertain to me at all.”

“The rules of the auction say the bachelorhasto go on a date with someone. And since Karen backed out, she gave a name of the someone she wanted to go out with me instead.”

“And she picked me?”

Brant nodded.“She picked you.Thank the lord she didn’t pick Patty. That would’ve made things very awkward at work.So what do you say?Think you can stand to be around me for a day?I promise I won’t bring any needles.”

CC stared at Brant, trying to think of a way she could politely turn him down. She shouldn’t go out with him.It was too dangerous. She should say no.

“Sure,” she heard her voice say instead.“What could it hurt?”

Damn it.

Brant rose from the couch and shot her another dimpled grin.“Great.I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”she squeaked. Her voice was in the mood to betray her tonight.“Why so soon?”

“So you won’t have time to change your mind.”

“You didn’t even tell me what time to be ready.”

“How about you just be ready to go at a moment’s notice?”

After his words, Brant walked out the door, her bell jingling after him, leaving a myriad of butterflies fluttering in CC’s stomach. She just wished she knew if they were from anticipation or dread.
