Page 75 of Unlikely to Stay

When she was in fifth grade, she had Breckin’s dad help her with her science fair project after her mom suggested growing a pot plant and reporting on its medicinal healing facts. When CC said that was something the school wouldn’t allow, her mom hadn’t even come to the fair to see her daughter present. When CC brought home the blue ribbon for her project about copper and how it patinas, her mom didn’t even acknowledge CC’s accomplishment. It had been like that her entire life.

“Well, I think it’s good you were finally honest with her,” Sadie said.“Who knows?Maybe she’ll decide to finally grow up and come around. She’s not a bad person, your mom.She just…sort of disappeared when your dad left.”

“I know, Sade.But I was still here.”

Sadie smiled sadly.“I know you were. And you turned out pretty good regardless.”

“Well, I haveyouand Sophie to thank for that.Even Breckin’s dad.”

“Speaking of, did you hear?”

“Hear what?”

“Susan, Griff’s mom, won him in the auction. They went on some super fancy date in Lakeview and Marty Samson caught DonnieleavingSusan’s house at seven in the morning!I heard him tell Burt at their morning checkers match when I was taking them their coffee.”

“No, way!Imagine if they get together. That’s going to make for some awkward holiday dinners.”CC laughed.Breckin’s dad and Griff’s mom. What a family dynamic.

“Sure, it might be awkward, but if anyone deserves to be happy, it’s those two.Donnie hasn’t been with anyone since Breckin’s mom died when Breckin was two.Susan gave up dating to raise Griff when she kicked her drunkard of a husband to the curb.Besides, it’s not like they’re going to be having babies and confusing Breckin and Griff’s kids.”

CC’s eyes widened.“Griff and Breckin are having ababy?”

“No!I’m just saying…in the future…they probably will.”

“You about gave me a heart attack, Sade!”

Sadie laughed.“Trust me, if she’s pregnant she’ll call a powwow with you and Annie and tell you guys first. The three amigos can’t be separated.”

“True story.Okay, I think I’ve got everything covered,” CC said, giving one last inspection of Sadie’s hair color.“Now we just have to wait.”

“Oh, good. Now we can talk about your relationship with Brant.”

“We don’thavea relationship.”

“But you had a hot and heavy kiss.”

CC sighed. It looked like Sadie wasn’t going to let it go.“We did kiss.”

“Well?Was it good?”

CC couldn’t keep the smile off her face.“Sooogood.”

Sadie slapped her knee and laughed.“It’s about damn time!”

“What’s about time?”

“About time you decided you were good enough for that boy.I’ve had you matched up for quite some time.”

“I don’t know if it will develop into anything, Sade. He’s smart and educated and I’m just—”

“Don’t you dare say you’re just a hairdresser, missy. You aren’t defined by what you do.Do you think I’m dumb or not good enough for my Clyde just because I’m a waitress?”

CC didn’t even know whatClydedid for a living before he retired and started helping Sadie in the café full-time so she didn’t feel like she could answer that question fairly.

“I know what you’re wondering.”

“No, you don’t.”

Sadie raised one eyebrow.“You’re wondering what Clyde did before he retired.”
