CHAPTER TEN

MAGGIE

Changeling, Count, Fae, new bite camp...

“Julian, I would like to be taken to this new bite camp you have. I want to see Shannon,” I say, feeling ill at what she’s endured.

“Unfortunately, I can’t get away. There’s some backlash from the Council due to the events with Count Dupré. I have to stay here for a meeting.”

“I’ll take you.” Law says, avoiding my gaze, and I wonder why.

“Perfect. When can we leave?”

“Within the hour,” Law says, sounding tired and unhappy about this impromptu trip, despite having agreed to take me in the first place.

“We’ll pack our things,” Marina says, but I tune her out.

My mind whirls with all the information being thrown about. So much has happened since Marcellus saved me, and I’m having a hard time keeping up.

Here I thought I was in the know and it was Marina who was in the dark. I was so wrong.

Molly is alive and with the Fae... or at least she could be, and we’re all sworn to secrecy. The Council can’t find out, so until we have more information, we’re supposed to forget about the journal and the fact that our sister might be alive.

“We should be trying to find Molly. What if she’s in trouble?” I say to Law. “This is the Fae we’re talking about.”

“We don’t know enough about the Fae to go off half-cocked. We need to research more about them.” Law runs his hand back through his hair. “For now, let’s focus on Shannon.”

I nod my head. That would be a great project for me and Marina.

“Marina, you and I are going to—”

My words trail off as I turn toward Marina in time to realize she hasn’t been paying me any attention. While Law and I were discussing Molly, Marina and Julian were clearly having their own conversation.

One I’m very happy to have missed.

Marina saunters—like some sexy vixen—around the desk and pulls Julian in to her.

“What the hell?” I whisper under my breath.

I’m over here having an internal battle of the conscience about leaving our sister in the hands of the Fae, while she’s angling for something carnal right here in front of us all. At least that’s what it looks like from this vantage point. Did she not just hear what I heard? How is she not freaking out that our sister could be in the hands of creatures that are crueler than any monster that sat at the foot of our bed growing up? Creatures who could have her enslaved in a realm that’s foreign to us all.

“Bleach my eyes,” Law groans.

“Did I miss something?” I ask Law, dumbfounded by Marina’s actions.

This is not the sister I grew up with. She looks like a woman who’s well versed in seduction. It’s not entirely Marina’s actions that have me on edge, but the jealousy that for the past year she’s gotten to experience life. I moved from one cage to the next, when I think back on it. Having access to roam inside isn’t freedom. Only communicating with one other person for a year isn’t either.

“I’m getting out of here. This is nauseating.” I try to push down my bitterness but fail miserably, if Law’s narrowed eyes are any indication.

“I’m right behind you,” he says, following me out.

I push through the library doors and stalk down the hall, unsure where my feet are taking me but needing an escape from all of the heavy issues surrounding this place and the people within.

I’ve been shut away from this world for months, hoping that things were getting better. Yet there’s more to add to my ever-growingthings Maggie’s wrong aboutlist. It’s maddening. Disheartening.Terrifying.

“Sunshine.”

Law calls out to my back as I rush through the front doors and into the dark night.
