Page 90 of Blood that Burns
Law clears his throat and Marina pulls away from Julian, chuckling at the reminder that we were here to witness their passionate kiss.
But I know his reaction had nothing to do with their PDA. He heard my thoughts.
“Get a room,” Law titters, sounding awkward.
Marina rolls her eyes. “Like you care, Law. You’ve had more partners than everyone in this estate.”
I wince at the mention of Law’s extracurriculars. I’m not naïve enough to think the man hasn’t had more lovers than the average person, but the reminder turns my stomach. It’s even worse knowing how easily he’s fallen into bed with others, yet he won’t even get close enough for me to try.
Try harder.
I’m getting sick of my inner voice telling me what to do.
Law begins to cough.
Damn this whole bond.
“Maggie, are you ready?” Julian pulls me out of my head with a raised brow.
“Where are you going?” I direct to Law, who’s making his way toward the door too.
“I’m not allowing you to go down there without me.” His voice is gruff, and his mouth is set in a straight line.
“I’ll be with her, Casanova.” Julian grins and Law glares at him. “No need to chaperone.”
“I’m going.” It’s all he says before storming out of the room.
“What?” Julian asks, throwing his hands up in surrender as Marina frowns in his direction.
“Why do you have to mess with him? You know he’s sensitive on the subject,” Marina scolds.
Julian snickers. “Yeah well, for all his avoidance, he sure has a worthless poker face.”
My head volleys back and forth between the two. “What are you two going on about?”
“Nothing,” they say in unison.
I don’t push because I know damn well what they’re talking about. Law and his refusal to admit he has feelings for me.
Marina and I have discussed it so many times, but nothing has happened since the auction. He’s done a good job of avoiding me, outside of the trial and Council meetings. I’ve let him, more concerned about Marina’s welfare than my silly crush.
I sigh, following them out the door. I need to stuff down these thoughts about me and Law and move on with life.
Or grow some nerve and make my move.
Law peers over his shoulder, reminding me that none of my thoughts are sacred. I sigh, cheeks heating.
I will figure out how to block you.
Let’s just focus on getting through this meeting with Marc.
My body floods with emotion that’s not mine. Uncertainty. Anger. Fear.
Fear being the most potent. But why?
He knows about my part in our father’s death. He’ll likely use it to divert the attention away from himself.
Oh shit. I hadn’t thought about that.
My stomach dips and dives and I feel like I could be sick.
Be prepared for the worst, sunshine.
That’s something I could never be prepared for. Not in a million years. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep Law safe. Even if it means turning my back on Marcellus.
