Brooke’s hackles rose. Sam stepped toward her, putting a hand out as if to remind her he’d never cared what anyone in town thought of him.
But she did.
“For the record, Mrs. Bowers,” Brooke turned to the other woman, “you might think Sam is strange, but did you ever stop to think that maybe he keeps to himself because he doesn’t want people in his business? And, of course, getting into other people’s business is a Bliss Cove pastime.
“But if you’d like a rumor to spread, than I suggest you spread the news that Sam Donovan is amazing in every way. He’s strong, kind, smart, caring, and more loyal than I think he even realizes. He would never admit it, but he’d do anything for anyone. So if that’s your definition ofstrange, then he fits the bill perfectly.”
The mayor opened and closed her mouth. Sam stared at Brooke, his expression faintly stunned.
“However…” Brooke grabbed her purse and spun toward the door. “You heard right, Mrs. Bowers. Sam and I are most definitely not together.”
She stalked outside and hurried toward a cab idling at the curb.
