Cash grunted and shrugged with a smile.

“Uh-oh. Are the grunts coming back?”

Cash chuckled and stretched his arms toward me.

I gladly took the invite and looped my arms around his waist.

“You know what I realized today?” I asked him.

“What’s that?” His green eyes steadied on mine.

“You don’t actually have to stay here any longer. Rob’s been back in North Carolina for a while now.”

He smirked. “Damn. I was hoping you didn’t put two and two together.”

I laughed and took a step back. “Notice anything?”

I spun around without my boot.

“You’re supposed to have it on for another three weeks.” His brows rose.

“Grace took me to physical therapy at the doctor’s office, and they checked with the doctor, who said that I seem to be healing really well, and as long as I don’t do anything crazy and keep up with my exercises, I can have the boot off for most of the day.”

Surprise darted across his expression. “Nice. That will make the corn maze a lot easier. I had visions of you and your boot getting stuck in the mud.”

I rolled my eyes. “Tell me about your parents.”

He stalled for a few seconds before answering by pulling my hands into his. “They met Brielle and Hunter on the way out of town.”

I was shocked. “From the camping trip?”

“Turns out it wasn’t only buckthorn Brielle got into during their sexcapade.” Cash chuckled. “She had a bad case of poison ivy...down there... so Hunter stopped off at my parents’, and she spent the night in a cool bath.”

My hands went to my mouth. “No way.”

Cash nodded. “And my mom doesn’t seem to be very impressed.”

“Well, trying to explain how you got poison ivy there probably doesn’t do well for potential daughter-in-law relations.”

Cash shuddered and opened the grocery bag. “Definitely not a potential daughter-in-law with Brielle.”

I chuckled. “I don’t know. If it doesn’t work out between you and me, she seemed pretty game.”

Cash put down the hot dog buns and stared at me. “It’s going to work out with us.”

Seeing the seriousness in his eyes made my stomach gnarl into a giant ball.

“I was only teasing.”

Cash smiled and nodded. “I know. It’s just...”

I walked over and slid my arms over his shoulders. “It’s just what?”

“It’s nothing.” His voice lowered.

He emptied out the rest of the grocery bags and wandered over to Chewie for pets.

I’d obviously struck a nerve.
