Page 118 of Pinch of Love
Maybe we were getting too serious, too fast.
We’d been on a permanent vacation nearly since I’d gotten to town. Granted, I’d loved every second of it, but maybe it was making things too real.
Making the unattainable seem reachable.
“I didn’t mean to make light of us.” I drew a deep breath and collapsed next to Chewie.
“I know. It’s totally fine.” He sat down and propped his feet on the ottoman and stretched.
It was hard not to lean over and start rubbing my hands along his broad chest and go down the path of hopping into bed early.
But that was what he did to me. All I had to do was be near him, and I suddenly wanted to climb on his lap.
“What?” His brows arched. He sounded like the grump I’d first met.
“Nothing.” I folded my arms over my chest. “Two can play that game.”
A smile touched his lips, but it dropped when he saw me looking at him.
“So, what about Brielle and Hunter?”
“My parents and your grandmother apparently feel it would be a good idea to set up my brother and Daisy.”
“What?” I squealed. “Are you serious?”
“It’s all part of the book club, I’m telling you.”
I chuckled and shook my head. “Granted, I do believe there have been some major coincidences, and Grace has joked about their meddling, but I’ve gone to two meetings, and I didn’t find any evidence.”
Cash laughed and shook his head. “Even when they called me to pick you up from the book club? Grace could have driven you home.”
I knew he was right, but it was kind of fun seeing his feathers get ruffled. It was part of what made me fall for Cash in the first place.
“You’re like an old man boxed up inside a super sexy body.”
“Oh, yeah?” He grinned and looked at Chewie. “She thinks I’m an old man.”
“In a super sexy body,” I added.
Cash’s eyes connected with mine, and he rested his head on the couch.
“I need to go down south to pick up some stuff for my new property. It’s just easier for me to take the utility trailer, but I’ll probably spend the night. Are you okay with staying overnight alone?”
His words froze me in place. I wanted to tell him about Rob, but I was so sick of him and his games. I hated how they were becoming a part of what Cash and I shared.
And they were merely words. He wouldn’t come back here. He’d decided to cause pain in the only place left to hurt—my pocketbook.
“Totally fine,” I assured him, pushing away the unease slowly creeping into my veins.
He flipped on some music and smiled, closing his eyes. “There is something so effortless about being with you.”
I had to agree.
Sliding my hand to his, I let out a sigh as he sat up. I turned to look at him.
Our eyes met, and I smiled. “Do you think it’s going to work when I leave in three weeks?”
Something darted behind his gaze. “If we want it to.”
