Maya’s brown eyes locked on mine. “How?”

“This is the week we promised my brother we’d go camping.”

She snickered and nodded. “I can tell you with full honesty that this is the first time I’m excited about going on a camping trip. No, actually relieved.”

I nodded in agreement. “It’s probably best that we leave town for a few days. Maybe not being able to find you will make your ex go back home.”

Maya scooted toward the window with her knee propped on the scooter and looked at the lake glistening in the sunshine.

Without thinking, I walked over to Maya and slid my arms over her shoulders from behind as we looked at the water together.

She held onto my hands that hung over her chest, finally letting out a deep breath. “The good news is that this is the last day of the scooter. I can start putting weight on my foot.”

“There’s a silver lining,” I teased.

Maya hobbled around to face me, and I knew I wanted nothing more than to kiss her. So much had gone on since we last kissed that I wasn’t sure if there’d ever be another one.

But I thought of her every second we weren’t together.

Her beautiful dark hair.

Her soft brown eyes.

The little pucker in her lips when she’d get confused... or stuck in a wall.

Maya looked into my eyes, and I lost it.

“You’ve been through so much, and it’s not over,” I said gruffly. “Tell me if this isn’t okay.”

She blinked and nodded, and my entire body heated with the desire I’d been ignoring since I’d temporarily moved in.

My hands cupped her cheeks, and her eyes closed, waiting.

It was the most beautiful thing, seeing the anticipation and the same need I felt.

I pressed my mouth to hers. Maya’s lips parted, and her tongue swirled against mine. Her sweetness surrounded me as my mouth pressed against hers. Our kisses felt like only the beginning of what was to come.

Her hands slowly moved underneath my shirt, sliding against my skin, leaving a wake of warmth where they left. I moved her slowly and kicked away the scooter.

She giggled between kisses as I cupped her butt and sat her on the counter.

Maya opened her eyes and looped her arms around my neck.

“You make me feel so special and like all my problems are manageable.” She pressed her forehead against mine as my pulse quickened at her words. “I’m so confused.”

But she didn’t let go. She didn’t push me away.

She held me.

I brushed my hands along her back, and she closed her eyes, and I knew I needed another kiss.

This time, the need outweighed any gentle touch.

My mouth pressed against hers.

Hard.

She let a little moan escape as she pulled me in closer, wrapping one leg around my waist as the other one with the boot dangled.
