I moved a little to the side but continued to plead my case with him. “Please…I promise I won’t try to get on the plane or something. I just need to say goodbye to someone and I’ll be out before you know it.”
“Lady, they ain’t gonna make you go in just to see your boyfriend!” a stocky man grumbled past me, shouldering his way in through the gate.
I briefly mumbled an apology to him and to the rest of the line that I was holding up. I stood to the side so I was not blocking the influx of passengers and turned my eyes to the man in charge.
“Wait a sec,” he said, holding a hand up to me. He got on the phone and called up his boss to explain the situation.
I stood there, wringing my hands together, craning my neck, hoping for a glimpse of Oliver. With every moment, my heart sank.
What if he’s already gone? What if I missed him? I shouldn’t have taken too long to read his letter and decided to come over…
“What’s going on here?”
I turned around at the sound of the sharp tone and found a woman in her fifties with her hair pulled back into a tight bun at her nape. There wasn’t a single strand of hair out of place and her navy blazer was immaculately tailored to fit her. A simple pin glimmering from the lapel of her blazer and a pair of gold stud earrings were all the adornments she wore.
I could tell she was a very exacting woman.
“I…” I stammered. “The love of my life is leaving for London and I want to be able to say goodbye to him, at least. I promise I won’t stay overlong. I just want to be able to say goodbye…”
The tears slipped from my eyes as I looked at her hopefully.
She frowned. “If I let you past this gate, then I could very well lose my job.”
My heart fell at her words. Clearly, she wasn’t going to let me in to see Oliver.
It’s all over, I thought miserably. He’s leaving and I will not see him for years again. Years!
The future seemed to stretch out bleakly before me.
“I’ll never see him again…” I murmured, the tears slipping down hot and fast. “Please…it won’t take five minutes…I’m begging you.”
She gave me a stern look and I knew that she wasn’t going to budge at all. What I was asking for was strictly against the rules.
“I promise I won’t cause any trouble…” I pleaded with her. When I saw that she wasn’t going to change her decision, I felt my body sag in defeat.
“Go.”
That one word pierced through my hazy, tear-filled daze.
“I beg your pardon?” I blinked at the woman with her immaculately tailored blazer and her perfectly styled hair.
She smiled at me, a twinkle in her dark eyes. “Go and get your love.” She smiled. “But I’ll keep an eye on you.”
Then, she opened the gate for me.
I looked at her with a grateful smile and murmured “Thank you, thank you, thank you, you’re an angel!” before rushing into the gate.
I ran like I had never before run in my entire life, bumping into some people who let out sounds of dismay. I didn’t care—all that mattered was that I got to Oliver before he left for London.
However, when I reached the boarding-gate A3, I found the staff packing away to make way for the next flight. I looked out to the huge glass windows that provided a view into the runway, my heart falling as I saw the plane pulling out of the dock.
No…no…
I rushed up to the windows, pressing my hands to the glass as the plane moved slowly towards the runway.
My tears slipped hot and fast down my cheeks as I watched the plane bear Oliver away from me, my fingers pressed to the glass window.
I’m too late. I’m so sorry, Oliver. I’m too late…
