“Why do you keep talking about him in past tense? And what about the police?” I’m all for them opening up and being honest, but I’m still struggling to come to terms with how deep this all goes. Something still doesn’t add up, and I swear, if anyone tries hiding any more from me now, I may just shank them.

Emitting a long sigh, I use the calmest voice and try again. “Someone better start from the beginning because I’m over this shit and I’m about ready to stab someone.”

A deep rumble comes from the head of the table.

“I like this one, Ace.” Moose states, then Crow pipes in, “Boy, you better do as she says. We don’t need any more bloodshed today.”

I raise my eyebrow in wonder and look between Moose, Cory and Crow. Anyone who knows Cory will be able to see the agony held in his eyes, but with shoulders squared and palms flat on the table, he looks unaffected.

“C’mere, baby girl, I need to hold you for this.”

“Pussy,” Tucker mock coughs into his fist, followed by various taunts from around the table.

I ignore them all and hop on my man’s lap, right where I’m meant to be as he tries to fill in all the gaps for me, but instead huffs behind me and whispers in my ear. “Angel, you keep moving like that and we’re going to have a situation, and I sure as hell don’t want these men to see your peachy arse.”

I stop, literally like I’ve just been caught, and my face heats up.

“Ha, looks like you two will be needing that room back.”

“Shut ya face, Rusty, or I’ll shut it for ya!”

“Okay, okay, Cory, stop with the macho man shit. There’s enough testosterone in here to sink a ship, and I, quite honestly, would like to know the answers to those questions you’re dodging,” I add with frustration, “enough is enough, Ace.”

He releases a long breath before starting from the very beginning. While I sit there wide-eyed, there’s no way I could have listened to any of this story without our physical contact. As the story goes on, he leaves no detail unturned. Wanting to know the truth is one thing. Hearing it however has left me uneasy and vulnerable.

Bit by bit my walls come up, and with every breath thereafter, the dark hole welcomes me home.
