“They were. They chose, or were banished to, the mortal world.”
“So you could turn into a vampire. Could I?”
“I will only turn into a vampire if I stay here for a year and a day. I am not staying here that long.”
“And me?” I press.
“You were born here. You will never become a vampire.”
Okay. At least that’s one less thing to worry about.
The door rattles as someone tries to get in. They bang on the door. “Hurry up.”
Since we can’t stay in here forever, we need a plan. “So what now?”
“Now I hunt the vampire and kill him.”

Kov
Her eyes widen, like I’ve said something shocking.
“I mean about my magic. I don’t want to accidentally destroy the world.” Her teeth rake over her lower lip and I know there is more she wants to say even if she doesn’t give the words form.
“It wouldn’t be an accident, for a start. Your magic would keep growing and you would fail to manage it and bang!” I clap my hands. “Destruction.”
Her mouth opens and I’m not sure if she wants to be kissed or if she is about to say something else. I opt for the former, mostly because I want to kiss her again. I press my lips to hers and she wriggles as though to fight me before moaning into my mouth. I smooth my hand over her ass and make sure that her small skirt is covering what is mine, and then I unlock the door.
A man and a woman stand on the other side, and they spring apart as though they weren’t expecting me to appear in the doorway.
“Took you long enough,” the man snaps.
“A warrior always takes his time when pleasuring a lady, as you never know what the next battle will bring.” I grin and pull Andrea back into the party. I need a plan to trap the vampire and kill him, but I’m not ready for this interlude to end. In part because I haven’t told her what will happen to her. While I can put her over my shoulder and carry her away, I’d much rather that she come willingly to Fairy.
I lead her back to the party and she follows, her fingers tight around mine. The noise and the beer make it feel like a celebration, but I haven’t done anything worthy of note yet.
“Kov.” She tugs on my hand and I slow. “What about my magic? What do you know that you aren’t telling me?” She rocks back, one hand flying to cover her heart like it will offer some kind of protection. “Oh my God. Do you have to kill me?”
I don’t have to. I don’t even want to because she is mine. My mate that I have already claimed. But she can’t be left alive in the mortal world to create havoc.
“I do not.” I turn and press her against the wall. It would be too easy to fuck her again, but this is too public for my liking even though some like making a public display. I do not want to be caught mid-thrust by a vampire determined to take my blood. “You have a choice.”
She looks up at me and nods as if she is ready. “What are my choices?”
She’s not going to like them. I can’t imagine that any halfling does. In that breath, I understand why the fae choose to kill on sight instead of talking and preparing the halfling for what will happen. The fae would rather die that take a halfling mate. Killing them is quicker and cleaner.
Still, I am not some cold-hearted fae. They say trow blood runs hot and maybe that is true since we have metal and fire magic.
“You cannot stay here where your magic will be disruptive.”
“I know…so?”
“You must come to Fairy with me.”
She laughs, then stops. “Oh fuck. You’re serious.”
“I rode with the hunt for only two reasons. To kill vampires and, with luck, catch a halfling.” I don’t add mate. I’ll tell her that part later. “That is the hunt’s job.”
