Fucking prick. He had this all worked out. How the fuck did he know we’d be here? This is my father’s home, not Makenna’s.
I hear footsteps behind me, and my body tenses. What the fuck? What the hell is she playing at? Why the hell is she out here? Doesn’t she know how dangerous it is?
“I fucking knew it,” Romero growls. “That cunt,” he spits.
Anger whips through me at his words, but I don’t turn as I hear the footsteps grow louder. If Romero carries on, I’m going to kill him before the day ends. There’s no way in hell that Destiny is working with that bastard. But I want to know what the hell she’s playing at by coming out here.
“Ah, Destiny, there you are,” Carter says with a wide grin.
I frown at his words. How the hell did he know she was here? We didn’t even know we were coming until this morning.
“You ready?” Destiny says into her cell as she walks past her father and toward the new vehicles that are idling. “Do it.”
Instantly, bullets fly. My heart stammers as I watch Carter hit the deck, covering himself, while the majority of his men he arrived with get shot. Every single one of them have a bullet between their eyes. They were dead before they even knew what happened.
“What the fuck?” Carter snarls, getting to his feet and glaring at his daughter. He brushes off the gravel from his ill-fitting suit.
Destiny smiles. “Oops,” she says. “How does it feel, father—to know you have no one left on your side?”
As the words leave her mouth, the men who survived the hail of bullets move away from Carter and stand beside Destiny.
I’m at a fucking loss for words. What in the actual fuck is happening right now?
“You?” Carter hisses. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Father and daughter stand against each other, both staring at the other with utter contempt. I hate this. Despise that she’s even this close to him. He tried to sell her. I want to drag her into my arms and push her behind me.
“You should have known your men had turned,” she tells him. “I must admit, it was a lot easier to have the others turned than I thought.” She’s taunting him, and all I can do right now is look on like a fucking spectator.
He gapes at her. “So, what—you’re the boss now?” His laughter is mocking and bitter.
She scrunches her nose up. “Not my style. It would have been easier to have you continue to rule, but that was never an option. You deserve everything that’s about to come to you.”
The arsehole steps closer to her, and I tense even further. If he even thinks about taking another step closer, I’ll gut him like a fish.
“You can’t disable the organization,” he grunts.
She smiles brightly. "I won’t, but I also have no desire to take over, but there's someone else who's more than happy to."
Her father stills. “Who?” he demands. “Who do you think will take over? None of my men will allow it.”
She laughs at him. “That’s where you’re wrong. The reason the men stand here before you is because they’ve already pledged their allegiance to their new leader.” She bangs her fist against one of the cars and then steps back.
The car door opens, and out slides Levi and Conrad, along with their men.
“Conrad?” Carter spits out in disgust.
Destiny shakes her head. “No, not Conrad.” She grins widely as she looks at her cousin. “Father, meet the new boss. Levi.”
Her father gapes at her, and I know Destiny is loving this. I know Destiny and her family had this planned out, but it wasn’t supposed to happen for a few more weeks. They had hoped to gain more men before trying to do this. I guess James took that plan out of their hands.
“Why?” Carter questions. “Why give away your heritage?”
She scoffs. “Heritage? The only heritage I’m fucking proud of is the Buchanan side. I mean, without the money that came from my grandparents, where would the Carter organization be? Dead and fucking buried,” she snarls at him.
“She wouldn’t be doing this if you didn’t have Jasmine killed,” Conrad growls at him.
Her father looks at his brother-in-law, and his face pales. “What?”
