“Phew.” She wipes her brow. “I was scared for a second. Okay, give me the story.”

By the time I finish giving her an update on all things Wyatt and drugs, she’s eaten three cookies and gasped about twelve times.

“Your life gives you plenty of material for writing,” she eventually says after she’s digested everything I just told her.

“Ha! I assure you, I won’t be adding any non-fiction into my books. That makes it all too real. Actually, I’d like to forget it all happened.”

“I don’t blame you.”

“Well, I should amend that. There’s parts I never want to forget.”

“More story time?” she asks hopefully. I nod and she claps. “Let me pee quick and refill my coffee.”

While she’s in the bathroom, Corbin texts me to make sure Paisley got here okay.

Me:Yup! She just heard all the Wyatt drama.

Corbin:And she stayed? That’s a good sign. She doesn’t scare off easily.

Me:Hahaha

Corbin:I’m so pissed that I have to work today. This sucks.

Me:Duck out early? Or just leave?

Corbin:You’re a bad influence. I wish I could but I have a lot to do today.

Me:Sucks to be you.

She replies with the middle finger emoji.

Paisley plops back down on the couch. “I love that bathroom.”

“Thank you,” I reply, smiling.

“Now to the good story.”

“Right…” I’m interrupted by a knock on the door. I hold up a finger and stand from the couch. “Just a second.”

“No problem.”

I open the door to see my dad standing on the other side. “Well, this is a surprise. What are you doing here?” I ask, opening it for him to come inside.

“Can’t a dad stop in to see his daughter?”

I have a feeling he heard that Wyatt was here this morning. And possibly Brock’s truck here overnight. Nothing stays quiet for long in Red Oak. “Of course he can. My friend Paisley is here.”

“Is that whose car I see in the driveway?”

“Yup.”

When we get to the living room, Paisley is standing up. “This is my dad. Dad, this is Paisley.”

They shake hands and Dad says, “Chris. Pleasure to meet you, Paisley.”

“Same.”

“Your trip down okay?”
