Cash nods. “It’s been a helluva week, huh?”

“That it has. Don’t tell Corbin, but she does a lot of crap around the office, doesn’t she?”

He grunts. “You’re telling me. She was caught up before they left, too, but it just keeps piling up.”

“She’d kill us if she came back to a mess.”

“That or she’d lock us in the office until we got it caught up.”

I chuckle and open the door, greeted immediately by the owner of the restaurant.

“Boys!” With a wide smile, he rounds the counter and wraps the both of us in a hug. Stepping back, he keeps his beefy hands on our shoulders. “I didn’t know y’all were coming in tonight.”

I almost laugh but hold it in. George has been the owner of this little pizza place for longer than I’ve been alive. He says the same thing every time we come in, as if we’re supposed to call ahead and let him know we’re on our way.

“Last minute decision,” Cash replies, as usual.

“Anyone else joining you two?”

“Boone and Cody should be here soon.”

He nods. “I’ll get you the best seat. I’ll put some mozzarella sticks on for ya. I know how much our Cody boy loves ‘em.”

Cash and I share a smile and follow him to one of the tables toward the back of the restaurant. The red and white checkered table cloth is one of those things that makes me think of home. Not my actual home, but Red Oak.

George seats us and calls a waitress over, even though I’m sure he could recite our order by heart.

“I’m Brooklyn, I’ll be your server tonight. Can I start you off with something to drink?”

“Three Cokes and a Sprite!” George hollers as he walks to the front.

She looks over her shoulder then back at us with her eyebrows raised. “That work for y’all?”

I grin at her. “Sure does. We can order, too.”

“Oh,” she says, flustered. “You already know?”

“Yup. We’re regulars. Which is why we know you’re new here.”

She flushes a bit and tucks a strand of hair that came out of her ponytail behind her ear. “Yeah, first week, actually.”

“You’ll get your feet wet tonight, then. You know how busy this place gets on the weekends.”

“Oh, I know. I’m a little nervous.” She gasps and covers her mouth with her hand. “Oh my gosh, that was so unprofessional.”

“Nah, no worries. I’m Cash, he’s Brock. Our brother and nephew are coming, too. You’ll get to know us and realize we’re pretty chill. No need to be nervous.”

“Thanks,” she says quietly. “Okay, what can I get ya?”

“George already put in an order of mozzarella sticks for us so make sure it’s on your ticket so we pay. He tends to forget that part,” I add with a chuckle. “Our nephew will have a small pepperoni with extra cheese. We’ll all take side salads, two with Ranch, one with Caesar, and one with French and Ranch. And a large supreme for us.”

“Wow, you really do have it down, huh?”

“Not our first rodeo,” Cash replies.

She laughs a little then says, “Be right back with your drinks.”

As soon as she’s out of earshot, Cash says, “She reminds me of someone but I can’t put my finger on it.”
