Our second round is delivered and we hand over some cash. Neither of us will drink more than two tonight and after this, we’ll switch to water.

For the next several minutes, we go back and forth between watching the game on TV and chatting and even though I haven’t forgotten – nor ever will – the fact that Wyatt cheated on Naomi, at least it’s not the only thing I’m thinking about.

My phone buzzes in my pocket with a text so I pull it from my pocket and smile, turning the phone so Cash can see.

“They’re having a good time.”

“Yeah, they are. They must have had facials today. At least, I assume that’s why their faces are covered in green gunk.”

“Nice detective work,” he jokes.

“Thanks, I thought so.”

“When do they come home?”

“It was going to be tomorrow, but they’re staying an extra day so they can go out to dinner with some girl they met. I guess she works at the hotel and the three of them hit it off. They were going to have dinner tonight but something came up on her end so they decided to stay an extra day.”

“More money out of your pocket.” He winks and grins.

“How’d you know about that?”

“No secrets in the family. Well, except for the one I just spilled, but that’s not my fault.”

I shrug and pocket my phone after typing a quick response to Naomi.

“I figured they’d enjoy it even more if they didn’t have to worry about the price tag.”

“Sure, that’s the only reason.”

“Shut up,” I mumble, finishing the last of my beer then taking a drink of the water that we asked for a few minutes ago.

“I still can’t believe that Cody already has girls chasing after him. He’s too young, isn’t he?”

“He’s twelve,” I remind him. “Kind of the age it all begins, right?”

He leans back, threading his fingers together over his stomach. “Suppose so. It’s weird, though. He’s supposed to be little yet. We’re getting old, man. What’d you think of his comment that we’re all single and old?”

“It’s the truth. Sucks, though.”

“Yeah, but you’ve just been waiting for your girl. I’ve been… hell, I don’t know what I’ve been.” He drags a hand through his hair and sits forward. “Can I tell you who I thought that Brooklyn girl reminded me of?”

“Of course.”

“Hadley.”

I think for a moment. “Hadley… the one you had a fling with like fifteen years ago?”

“That’d be the one. I’m surprised you remembered her name.”

“You’ve mentioned her a time or twelve,” I tease.

“Something about Brooklyn. I don’t know. She just seemed familiar to me. Maybe it was her coloring or something.”

I shrug. “Could be. Maybe you need to do some detective work of your own and find out where Hadley is now.”

“What’s the point? She waspromisedto another man.”

“I still don’t understand what that means.”
