He sighs. “I don’t know. Her parents and his parents were close. Old money, I guess. Like the big kind of old money that has their kids going to the expensive prep schools and spending summers in Europe or some private island. It was like a forgone conclusion that the two would marry one day. The parents had it all planned out like it was a business deal.”

I wrinkle my nose. “That’s messed up. What if they didn’t love each other?”

“Don’t know. She said it was a whole thing and didn’t want to talk about it and wanted to have fun before she couldn’t.”

“That sucks, man. I don’t get it. Aren’t parents supposed to want what’s best for their kids and for them to be happy? Just because they have money shouldn’t change that.”

“Most do, I hope.”

He’s quiet for a while and I let him sit in his memories while we finish our waters.

Unfortunately our quiet evening is interrupted when Wyatt decides to join our little party.

“Well, if it isn’t the homewrecker and the homewrecker’s brother. Out to see what destruction you can cause here, too?”

I raise my eyebrows at Wyatt and see that the girl he was with isn’t by his side.

“What happened to your friend? She realized what a dirtbag you are and leave?”

His face grows red instantly. “She’s in the bathroom, asshole.”

“Ahh. So you figured you’d come over and start some shit about something that isn’t even true while she wasn’t here to listen to you get your ass handed to you by two guys who know the true story?” Cash taunts.

I grin at him, unaffected by Wyatt’s words and presence, aside from the fact that he ruined the perfectly good evening we were having.

“You don’t know shit,” he growls, his fists clenching.

“No?”

“Naomi would still be my wife if she would have kept her distance from your family like I told her to.”

“Aww. Are you butthurt that your wife wouldn’t do your bidding?”

“Fuck you.”

I raise my eyebrows, turning sideways in my seat and resting an arm on the table. “Big words from a narcissist.”

“Where is she?”

“Come again?” I ask, knowing what he’s asking but wanting him to come out and say it.

“Been by our house –”

“Her house,” I interrupt. His nostrils flare and I see his eyes widen.

“Ourhome. The one we built together. She’s been gone for days. You know anything about that?”

“What’s it to you? She’s no longer your concern, no?”

“Listen, jackass. I’m trying to repair what you broke. I can’t do that if I can’t talk to her.”

“Ever think maybe she doesn’t want to talk to you?” Cash interjects casually.

“She’s my wife. Of course she wants to talk to me.”

“Ex-wife, actually, but it’s convenient of you to forget that now, when your new girl isn’t around. That never stopped you before the divorce, now, did it? Seems like you get off on cheating. Is that what gets you hard? Knowing that you’re out there hurting someone?”

“What did you just say?”
